I have a 69 Barracuda with a 318 and automatic. It was born with a single exhaust pipe. I want to install a dual exhaust system.

First question: Assuming my single muffler knocks down 60 db, when I install 2 mufflers, do each of them need to knock down 30 db (60 db total) to duplicate the amount of muffling in the single muffler configuration? I suspect it's not that simple...

Second question: I want the dual exhaust to have a better/louder tone/sound. Not over the top, but nice strong sound appropriate for a nice classic muscle car. Classic Industries lists mufflers with qualitative levels of sound inside and outside the vehicle. Any recommendations on which one to get?

Third question: Is there a dual exhaust setup you recommend to do what I am looking for?

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Great idea. Two things. First, reach Tom Swope at Accurate Exhaust and see what he can do and secondly, contact Ruth at Waldrons Antique Exhaust. Tell both of them your ideas and they can set you up with pipes, hangers and special mufflers that will sound great and not be too loud or too quiet.

Plans for the car? Driver, spirited driving, occasional dragstrip? Budget?

Thanks. Had checked out Accurate website and will check out Waldron's. Consulting with various suppliers sounds like a good idea rather than trying to figure out the components on my own.

I'd say primarily driver. Looking to customize/upgrade it like I would have done had I had the money back in the early 70's. Don't plan on hard driving but want it to sound strong.

if you are on a budget like I always am, see what you can find for local exhaust shop, one that the old time knowledge and ability to handle work on these old cars. buy the mufflers yourself and any specialized hangers. take it all to the bender and tell him to bend. show him how you want it or get a pic of your exh from the FSM for that year.

I had to replace the rusted out mufflers on the Swinger I just bought. The last owner fashioned a dual exhaust by cutting the original Y pipe and adding to the other side. It's not too pretty but it is functional and with the new DynoMax Super Turbo mufflers it sounds pretty good for a stock 318. I used a #17730. Sometime today I can take a short video so you can hear them. tmm

I bet it's not. The sound through a muffler depends on "how much" is going through it. With duals, of course, you have cut the volume of gasses in half. you have also affected the frequency, IE the exhaust pulses. I'm sure "it's not" that simple LOL

Well cell phone videos are not good. I'm afraid I can't help you much. tmm

Unless you are going resto/correct with it buy a set of Dynomax super turbos and hang them.Run an h-pipe and mandrel bent tubing would be best.On a mild 318 2" pipe would work and 2.25 would sound a little louder. If it drones at your cruising rpm's you can intall resonators in the tailpipes to cure it.

My winter motor was a LC teener (circa 1973). I ran the same TTIs and 3 inch H-piped pipes with the same Dynomaxers(circa 1999), that I run on the summer 360 motor.
Very pleasant tone.Loud but not overly so (subjective, I know) Lots of torque. I ran it with every gear from 2.76 to 3.55. I actually liked the 2.76s. The TQ moan was never ending! I ran the teener with the low first/loc-up 904, and about a 2400 TC.
I eventually sold that engine to my son,cuz he liked it so much. Many years later, I bought it back. Now it sits languishing under the hood of a worn out 84 D100.(the body, not the engine)
All the best to you

If you want that 1960's to early 1970's sound like I did for my two barrel 318, i would recommend the Purple Hornies glasspaks. I had a local shop fabricate the pipes, which exit in front of the rear tires like the AAR Cuda. Video with sound:
