Blew up my 440 with automatic trans and.....

-
Is this in a A body with a 440 if so pull it as a unit, I am pretty sure the 727 will not slide past the converter in the car.

I've pulled a 440 out of a truck with the converter still bolted without issue, but I agree it might be too tight in an A body.

? Did I not ask this correctly? In order to get the engine out of car I need to turn the engine so I can unbolt the flex plate from the torque converter, then the trans from the engine. It was an easy question and I was just wondering if anyone has had this happen to them.
I should have posted it over at Moparts for additional stupid replies.
Actually you dont. I've pulled a locked up big block 400 a few years back. Lift the car and support it on jack stands as high as it can go that will still allow a hoist to lift it out, lift the engine and trans out through the engine bay, then once it's out, simply un bolt the bellhousing from the block and pull the whole trans back and out of the toque converter, then you'll be able to get all the bolts out for the torque converter.

If that engine wont turn, it's stuck, meaning its gotta come out regardless.

Everyone has mentioned the advice I have already but man that sucks. Funny how that is a situation no one ever thinks about happening.

I'll be watching this one to see how it goes!

It is funny how things happen. In the end it's just more time and money! I hate wasting both!

IMO, you'd need to pull the pan off and loosen the main caps for any chance turning the crank.
I'd just pull both as a unit. Lifting the rear of the car can help with the tail shaft housing clearing the floor.

There's your problem.......you installed the wrong antifreeze! It's supposed to be the blackish, thick stuff.

Yes back in 1974 , brand new 440 , parked it and next day it would not turn over , revolt no turn , breaker bar no turn , pulled out engine and trans together

Wow!! Did it hydro-lock? That anti freeze is cleaner than what I've seen come out of the actual cooling systems on some cars.

Lordie, I'm glad you can laugh. The demise of my original 70 V code was on I-5 S of Stockton, about 2:AM in the early 70's. This was on a semi-illegal 4 day's off from NAS Miramar. Spent the rest of the weekend...........

Drunk wrecker operators from "wherever" into Stockton.......

Bus ride to 'Frisco

Taxi to Oakland airport

Big plane back to San Diego.

Fired up the black '64 440 (426) rented a U haul tow bar and drove all the way from San Diego to "wherever" S of Stockton and towed the poor thing back to NAS Miramar.

No 6 rod cap? rod let loose, one or two next to that one, and broke the cam. I Pulled the distributor, the intake, the valve covers, and threw the rest into the garbage can.

that sounds like one hell of a trip! I was about 1/2 mile from my garage! and FYI.... the original engine for this car was/is long gone.

did you pull the spark plugs ?

No but I did get the drivers side head off and everything looks good with the head. All the cylinders look okay (no scoring) above the pistons. tomorrow I will take off the passengers side head and drop the pan. I'm pretty sure I broke a rod, rod cap.

Well everyone answered the question I had.

Was not exactly sure what you were asking but it seemed the best choice was to pull it all together then separate it. Thought it may have been an A-Body but you did not say!!

Best to you getting it repaired!
