Does anyone know of a way to clean/brighten up the finish of a hood latch by maybe soaking it in something that will strip the crud/corrosion off of it? I am not looking to have it replated or whatever it was that was done to them when new and I don't want to sandblast and/or paint it either unless I absolutely have to.

In my opinion the best idea is to glass bead it and then send it off to a Company that can silver zinc it. When you get it back you just add some grease and it will look as new for the next decade!

Mix up some liquid automatic dishwasher soap and hot water and drop it in a bucket. Let it soak and scrub with a brush. It will take off any paint and crud if you soak it enough.

Degrease it really good with brake cleaner before soaking in evaporust.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I have a question about the Evaporust stuff. If the latch mechanism originally had some sort of plating on it, will the Evaporust have any adverse effects on the plating?
