Can you install a shorter A body 833 into a 71-74 B-Body?

Or will the brace (that the torsion bar mounts to) sit too far back on the short shaft?

I would have to call a no on this ......the A-body trans puts the shifter mount behind the crossmember and the B-body (front mount or W bench) puts it in front of the cross member so that's a huge conflict. If you used the rear mount (e-body location) for bucket seats with or without console ...the a-body shifter point will be too far forward.

I am sure someone can fab it and make it work but all depends on what kind of project you want to run here.

B/E transmission are way more common than A-body units.

The shifter has been sorted out enough to work.

It could be done , luckily the trans mount is in the right place , but by the time you do the rest of the required Rube Goldberg bs to make it work ... plus buy/make a longer driveshaft ... you could have bought the right trans.

The transmission crossmember is already cut to fit now (as of this evening), floor pans cut up anyways to be replaced, did not have to touch the torsion bar crossmember.

Isn't the A/F body trans the same length as the 904 auyomatic it replaced?

Yes same as 904. Problem is the location of the shifter mount. "Maybe" you could do it if you were willing to "high mount" whatever the supershifter Hurst used to have I don't remember what it was.
