KYB's seemed OK for me too for a while, but I found that if you've never experienced anything better, you'll won't know the difference.
Bilstein, Hotchkis, QA1 and such are simply in different leagues compared to the cheaper shocks.
They provide a smoother and way better control of the suspension movements.
