Working on a 1968 Barracuda
Installing 8 3/4 rear end. Have the housing and 3.91 SG. Has the 5 on 4" bolt pattern. Will the backing plates from a 69 Plymouth Belvedere 8 3/4 with 2x21/2 drums with 41/2" bolt pattern work? I know that I have to cut the axles to fit.
Thanks
Dave

You can use all of the 2 1/2" brake stuff if you go to Green bearings on aftermarket axles with the LBP, or cut down and respline a set of LBP axles from a C body!

the A body axle ends are .21" different than B/C, close enough that I did it with stock axle bearings and careful measuring. first time to the track with slicks a shortened axle snapped

You don't have to use green bearings to go to aftermarket axles. You just have to buy the right aftermarket axles.

As far as the B body axles, they usually can't be shortened to A-body lengths because of a diameter change along the length of the axle (there's a "step"). Typically only truck axles or C-body axles can be shortened down to A-body width.

I pulled the Bbody axles. Not enough spline to cut. What would be the correct aftermarket axles to buy for the Abody housing, 741 3.91 SG rear end with Bbody backing plates, 10"x21/2" 5 0n 41/2 drums? I'm building this rear end up for a customers 1968 Barracuda.
Thanks

Call "Dr Diff". I just did the same thing on an 741 83/4. He can fix you up with the correct parts all ready on backing plates. 1-406-883-4772. he knows whats what.

This. Cass is the man!

Thanks for the lead. Just got off the phone and we are hooked up. Let you all know the outcome. He said Bbody to Abody backing plates ok. Does this all day long. The other way around is a problem.

Right, you can use the big bolt pattern backing plates on an A-body, but ONLY if you use BBP axles. You can't use the B-body backing plates with the stock SBP A-body axles, because the axle flange offset it different on the SBP axles compared to the BBP axles.
