To PCV or Not to PCV...That is the question.

Title says most of it.
My mild teen has breathers on both valve covers.
There is a connection on the baseplate of the air cleaner but it is capped.

The question, Should I install a PCV and plumb it in?
If so, What will I need besides the PCV and the hose to connect it to the air cleaner?
I don't have any blow by issues. Breathers stay dry and the dipstick does not try to leave its hole, but want to make sure I am doing what I can to let the engine do its thing as long as it can, as well as it can.

The combustion gases that leak past the rings, and it does leak some,, is full of water vapor,, unless you suck that moisture outta the crankcase,, you'll start finding condensation inside your engine,..

Member Cannucky wasn't running PCV,, and wondered every time he pulled the Valvecovers to adjust rockers,, why there was grey sludge, and condensation on the inside of his valvecovers, and grey sludge accumulating the the valley depressions,, no pcv to suck the vapors,,

His carb (DEMON 950(?) didn't have a vac fitting, so he installed spacer plate with vac fitting under the carb,, no more sludge/condensation..

First hand.. we both saw it..

AND it's well documented,, do a search..

You need the valve and a length of hose to go from valve in the cover to carb base, large port.

You will need a breather and hose on the other side plumbed into the carb air filter base.

Done deal.

I know the OEM setup had one but did not know the importance of it so I am trying to learn.
I did not install the current system, the PO did and I want to make it right to keep my teen in good shape.
 


You need the valve Can I buy a generic PCV at the local parts house? or is there a specific one I need? and a length of hose to go from valve in the cover to carb base, large port My carb (Eddie 1405) has a large port on the front (capped) and one on the rear (brake booster) does it matter which port I use?

You should be able to find a breather with the nec fitting for the pcv, or just a grommet.. in a bubble pack at your local speed/parts store..

Are you running factory covers? Just tell them you need one for whatever year your engine is, I would try and get a metal one. They will probably want to know year, car blah blah.

Just hook it to the front as long as it's a large port on full manifold vacuum. You may need a nipple if there isn't already one there. Measure from the hol in the cover fomr a half circle so to speak over to the connection on the carb. Add a couple inches so you KNOW you have enough.

Well, the one that is on the vent is plumbed into the air cleaner so the engine is sucking in filtered air. Typically it has a cap with a nipple to hook the hose on, and then it's plumbed into the bottom of the carb filter.

And, my valve covers both have baffles. I curse them every time I change the oil and have to refill.


When it's all said and done, you want the inlet on one cover in the rear and the valve in the front on the other cover. Plug the extra vent on whichever side you put the valve.

It doesn't really matter which side the valve and breather are on as long as they are fore and aft and on opposite sides.

For a street car, I believe it's absolutely essential.

PCV and a breather tube with a hose to the air cleaner. Works well.
 
That explains a lot. It should be a sticky somewhere.
Would save you guys from answering dumb questions from the uninformed like me.
The whole conversation would be "Read the Sticky"

Actually,, had you done a "search" on PCV,, you woulda got several recent threads on the subject,,, and wouldn't have asked the question,, just sayin.. lol

This. The breather hose from one valve cover to the air cleaner, PCV to intake (carb port or manifold port) on he other.

Book em' Dano! Absolutely correct. I have the older open breather on my 66 (no tube to the air cleaner) When I romp on it hard, I get crankcase fumes in the car. My 70 doesn't do that but it has the tube to the air cleaner.

LOL, but he may have been in limbo, with 50% for and 50% against!
 
But which PCV valve are you going to use? Lots of them out there and all made for stock engine specs. How many of us have a "stock" engine?
