Steve McQueen vs. John Wayne

-
I like some of the newer westerns, like where Tom Selleck has a hand in them. he is very much into bringing in some sort of realism as far as sound of pistols, tack, making them more historically accurate, if really possible in Hollywood!????
I love the Lonesome Dove stuff, Robert Duval. Kevin Kostner, etc......
I also love the older western too. showing a difference in right and wrong, honesty, integrity.... some elements that ar e missing in a lot of modern tv and movie stuff??
yea I have to take the Duke. he will never be duplicated.

No Kevin Kostner, thank you very much. Now he can be in movies, it's OK with me, as long as it's a movie I ain't interested in. I do like Selleck and Duval. What I did NOT like is the modern crap like "Tomestone' and whatever the takeoffs were sposed to be Billy the Kid with what's er' names Estevez, Val Kilmer, barf!!!

I've been a huge Duke fan for a lot of years and will watch his movies over and over. One of my favorites is "The Searchers". I swear I know the dialogue by heart for most of his movies.
Regarding the newer westerns, "Open Range" with Robert Duval and Kevin Costner is an outstanding movie with all of the elements of right and wrong, honesty, integrity, etc. that the older westerns had.
Another of my favorites for sheer entertainment purpose is "Silverado" with Kevin Cline, Danny Glover, Kevin Costner, Scott Glenn, Jeff Goldblum, John Cleese, Brian Dennehy, Linda Hunt, and Patricia Arquette.

I liked "Silverado" EXCEPT for Kostner, who overacted every single chance he took.

The Duke! but the original American Baddass has to be Charles Bronson.

Gotta go with "The Duke"
Except for this one. John Wayne in plaid??? Yikes.

I like John Wayne, his real name is Marion Morrison. My grandpa's name is Marion, and I never meet a stronger man than him.
Steve McQueen has his place too, he is the "Cincinnati Kid" after all. Not to mention he was married to Ali McGraw.
Sand Pebbles and Papillon were probably his 2 best movies.
Paul Newman isn't one of your choices, but sure deserves a mention, as well as one of my all time favorites Cary Grant.

Newman and McQueen were friendly rivals in Hollywood, Towering Inferno, in which they appeared together was ( according to the trades of the time) a writer's nightmare, trying to balance their 2 roles. Two excellent actors with wonderful screen presence.

Cary Grant was one of the best. My wife and I agree, that in the tradition of the origiNAL James Bond Movies, (ie; From Russia With Love, Dr. No, Goldfinger, Thunderball) Grant would have made an excellent James Bond, had those movies been made 20 years earlier.

Brad Pitt was the modern movie of Jessie James. I enjoyed that movie. probably not a high $$$ budget. but I realize my tastes in general are not the norm!!! ha
a little trivia: I have lived couple miles from Winston, Mo where Jessie robbed one of many trains. the depot is still there and in the same condition of 1870's. lived 13 mi from Gallatin where Frank James was tried for murder and robbery, and acquitted! ha???
lived in an old bank building in N. K C, ( after a nasty divorce) that Jessie had robbed. the vault had sat in my living room!
Jessie James. a cold blooded killer? robinhood? displaced veteran??? makes for good westerns though.

Dell you mean you didn't like Broke Back mountain.!?
John Wayne all the way . I like Duval He's done some of his best work in his later years.
I also like Sam Elliot.

papillon is Fantastic.

No doubt, need to watch that one again soon.

Don't forget The Cincinnati Kid, The Sand Pebbles and The Magnificent Seven. I'll take McQueen any day over Wayne. Oh forgot Nevada Smith, great movie.

The Duke ALL the way! I'm one "named" after him and to that he's my Idol, as well as his American Image....... A true American Icon.

Steve McQueen, was good, but just not as good as the Duke, I like 'em both.....

But John Wayne "The Duke" ALL the way... True Grit, was thee best!

Sort of comparing Desoto's to Dodges. But will always be the moral character of Marion Michael Morrison.

Rio Lobo is the movie your searching for with the Confederates, ropes, uprooting trees and the train.

All time favorite scene John Wayne playing Davy Crockett talking to Col. Travis about his 23 Tennesseans, The word Republic and the first time you see your baby shave and make his first noise like a man.
