Hey guys so while surfing the web I ran across this 318 with a 727. I am a ways away from starting the restore on my 71 demon, but I know when I finally get around to it I wanna upgrade from the slant six that is in it now. I'm not really sure what this is worth but it seems like a helluva a buy to me. What's your thoughts?

Yup. Looks real complete for that price.

Does the /6 have a 727 behind it now? If not, a drive shaft shortening will be needed. I'd grab it. That is a good year for a teen. Should it be in good shape.

Make sure it turns. Plan on it being just a core, but a good start if not froze up.

My opinion, look for an inexpensive 360/727 combo with low mileage. A stock 318 will give you a little more HP than your slant 6, but a 360 will give you more to work with down the road.

Its worth it if the motor spins for sure. Keep in mind 68 won't have hardened valve seats though. If it spun by hand id put a little oil in each cylinder prime the oil system and start it on the ground. Then you will know what you have before you mess with it too much.

and requires less hi-po goodies for the same output.
And if you find a complete pkg, including things like the KD mech, the dizzy, carb, the mounts, etc; up here it might be worth 2 or 3 times that, even as a core. I have bought semi-complete donor cars to get what I need, for $250 to $350 . Bring your own wheels!

318 fine if your looking to make under 300 hp with decent mileage, can be made more without much problem but 360 would be a better choice for that.

Low CR 318 with 4bbl, headers and something like comps xe262h is said to get 282 hp.

I ran a 318 up to 500,000 k with two "refreshes" in it....

Nothing wrong with them, especially for a daily driver...

The 727 is worth $100 alone. Go for it. If you just want a street cruiser it will more than get it done, be reliable and drive able.

So what are your plans for the car?

As I hope the OP can see from the above comments, this is the key question to to answer. It sets the direction for the motor. But the trans alone looks like a good buy if it is intact.

Well so far the plan for the car is just a nice driver nothing fancy. I just want something reliable that I can take out and have a little fun with. I'm not building it for speed I just want a nice driver. But plans thus far are a little foggy at first I planned on just leaving it mostly how it is, but the more I think about it I am leaning towards converting it to bucket seats. For the most part though I plan on leaving most of it the way it is. I don't plan on building it until I get my 56 Chevy done and being in college my budget is going to be minimal so plan is a nice budget built daily driver.

Like said above, it's a good deal if the engine can be turned all the way over. If the trans still has fluid in it ask the seller of you can pull the pan off of it (it's going to be a mess). If the atf smells "burnt" and not like normal atf it's safe to assume the trans is cooked, also check for excessive amounts of aluminum sludge looking stuff on the magnet and pan (and any metal shavings etc.) If the seller does that he's probably cool with you pulling valve covers to see what's going on too lol

Well, that's a no brainer, sell the Chevy and build the demon

Sounds like the 318 fits your plans for the car. If usable or rebuildable, that looks like a good deal.

Ha knew this was coming sooner or later! The demon would be half done by now but grandpa gave me his chevy...so it takes precedence in this case. Only time a chevy comes first!
