I have a soft spot for old tools. I picked up an OLD Porter Cable Model 528 Type B for $20. It is a little dirty and needs to be cleaned but, it works!

I am going to clean it up, might put a new blade on it and see what it does. It uses an 8 1/4" blade and says to only use blades rated for 7000 rpm. Has anyone ever been around one of these?

Looks like there is a plug to add oil (or something) to it. I am looking around online for an owners manual now.

Yup. Very similar to my first saw. Cut a lot of rafters, stair stringers etc. with it.

Pretty cool. My big regret is that my Gramps used to have a little, compact "Mall saw." The attraction there is how light and small it was compared to "every other thing." It was great for light stuff and plywood.

Later in his life, it burned up the motor. Gramps gave it to my Dad and he had it re-wound. When Dad died I ended up with it. However, it was damaged badly in a house fire, and really no way to restore it.

I've got a really old Craftsman that looks very similar. Still works, and I have used it some, but I't is very heavy compared to todays lightweights. I like to collect old Auto related stuff and old tools. Here are a few I have on display in my shop.

I collect mountains of old everything. Just picked up a pile of saws, drills, grinders, knives, kitchen stuff. I have bikes, hand plows and cultivators, trains, slot cars, speed stuff, 2 and 4 cycle oil, hand tools, slot cars, cars, matchbooks, lighters, kegs and barrels, lawn mowers. I need to have a sale, but can't seem to part with any of it. I even still have my old surrey.

We watch for old USA made products. Old Pyrex, that was made in America.
Some of the new Chinese Pyrex has a non-homgenius blend of components (Borosilicate glass) that tends to shatter in the microwave. Given to us were old floor fans by Westinghouse and GE. These things run forever, and will be passed down to other generations. I have many old machinist tools (Brown and Sharpe, Millers Falls, etc) that are 70+ years old and still function perfectly.
We desperately need to get manufacturing BACK into this country. We are quickly becoming a service nation.

Wow... this went off the rails fast.

SOOOOoo... does anyone know if this thing takes oil? What kind?

My guess is if it takes oil it would only be a couple of drops on the saw side bearing. Maybe 3-in-1 or some furnace type oil. But I don't know for sure. Is there a button that locks the shaft to ease blade changes?

This area seems to be "blessed" with a bunch of thrift stores. However, after "the big crash" there is nowhere near the kinds of things that are being donated, anymore. Never a computer, or hardly ever, and of course no hard drive.

I haven't bought anything in the way of new clothes for years.

No, I don't believe it does have a button. I have it in the box in the bed of my truck. I am going to bring it in on break and clean it up. I will get some more pictures then.

There is a plug on the backside (between the handle and the blade) that looks like a plug for the gear box? I will get some pics of it too.

I love how the older tools are always almost all metal.

I was late getting out to break so I couldn't clean it up any.

It does have a flat for a wrench behind the blade that I didn't see before!

Check out the plug on the right side of the case. Does that look like an oil port? The brushes are on the far left.
