This SMALL project has really gone south on me. I discovered about a year ago that my spare tire well has pin holes in it. Been having trouble finding a used well that was rust free so I decided to buy new. Now I can't even find a new one!!! Has anyone here had this problem, and HOW were you able to solve it? Looking to buy in the new year, so if you have one for sale it won't be until after I get through Christmas. Thanks for your input. I looked at AMD and Keystone for new one's so far.

Looked at AMD, but don't want to buy a full trunk panel just to cut the well out. Thanks for the summit link!

Sherman is the only one I know of that just sells the well.

But keep in mind that replacing just the well means you'll have to butt weld the entire circumference of the spare tire well, whereas replacing the entire pan is just a bunch of spot welds. Replacing the whole pan would be easier, even if most of it is in good shape. Just something to consider.

And I really don't want to replace a perfect original trunk floor if it is not required.

Huh. The AMD panel is only $296 from summit here, but it needs truck freight so that isn't cheap. The Sherman panel is $100 here though, not sure what that means it will cost there.

If you're doing the welding yourself it isn't an issue, but if you're paying someone to weld it in the time required to weld the sherman panel in might end up costing just as much as the difference between the panels. Butt-welding sheetmetal isn't a lot of fun, and spot welding the whole panel in would be significantly faster. So it really comes down to labor/time. I do my own welding, so my labor/time is "free", but if you're paying someone you may want to talk to them first.

I WISH I could get panels for the prices you quote, but I live in the great white north, and we get raped by the exchange and shipping! As far as the welding it will not cost me anything.

then the punch line... The damn spare tire wont fit in the well.
Just replace it with a flat piece of metal cut from a old truck bed or wherever. Mount a donut in the trunk or underneath in a truck like fashion.

I use a 17" spare from a '07/08 Infiniti G35. Fits in the well, clears my 13" rotors in the front too. I think it has a 145/80/17 on it (~26" tall). All I did was a little dremel work on the hub bore, it was a couple mm's too small. Nothing major though, especially for a spare.

Hi 1968dartman,
Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but I recently bought the Sherman 195-76C for a 73 duster project. I haven't been able to find anyone that has installed one and only found two threads that reference it on FABO. Did you end up going with this option? If so, did you document/take pictures of the install?

I've got one as well, but I haven't done the replacement yet. I've just got a few pinholes anyway so I may not even weld in the whole piece. Of course, by the time I get to it maybe I'll need the whole thing.

Thanks for the build thread. I did not see that. I originally thought that I could just patch a couple spots in my tire well, but those small pin holes can quickly become larger holes when you start welding around them. At least it did for mine. Thanks again.
