My son has a welding helmet in which the lens does not darken 100% of the time. Should he be worried when welding?

Just kidding. I am going to start researching a replacement lens, but I was just wondering if someone might have some advice? Are they maker specific, or are there aftermarkets that are better? I am going to check back before I hit "send payment".

First, have you checked or replaced the battery recently?

Secondly, How much is a replacement lens, vs. A new helmet.

...and I'm not talking about one from Harbor Freight, either.

All auto darkening helmets can have sensitivity problems when working in odd positions and confined conditions. The light sensor needs a good sight path to the weld flash.

Some times I will remove the helmet and hold it with my hand to get it closer to the torch.

If you buy a new one, get the biggest lens you can afford. I have had excellent results with a cheap Hobart.

IMO, don't skimp here. Research and check the reviews then get the best one you can. Eyesight is a terrible thing to waste. As the saying goes ....You don't know what ya' got till it's gone!

I've used them all. Welded for over forty years long before auto helmets came along. Everyone has a specific company they prefer. Whatever you buy . harbor freight or whatever. Just be sure you buy one that fits your head properly, no sliding or slipping, and you will be fine.

Bought a pricy one several years ago. Started having issues where it would not darken at all or revert to clear while welding. Replaced it with a cheaper one ($75 - $100 ) from local auto parts store. It works just fine. Could replace it 5 times for price of my original one. Use your judgement but still get the largest lens your wallet will allow.

All Name Brand helmets have enough shade that getting flashed won't harm the eyes.

Can't speak for the cheap chinese ****.
