Hey guys for some reason i just happened to notice today that the shifter has some side to side play when in gear, the play seems to be coming from the shifter box and it seems worse in 2, 3 and 4. It is tighter in 1st but still has a little bit of play side to side.
Any thoughts?
This seem normal?
Its a original hurst shifter and shift box. Cant remember if i rebuilt the box or if there are shims in there its been 3 years since the car has been done,
It may have always done this but i can't remember

Any info is much appreciated

They do have shims between the levers that wear with lots of use.
Check that the top main pivot bolt is tight. It can loosen up and make a wore shifter
seem worse than it really is.
Although not as correct as replacing the worn shims a person can file or grind a small
amount from the end of the spacer sleeve. This is the one the main pivot bolt goes thru and aligns all the levers.
It can also be reinserted the opposite way and have a new wear surface for the levers to work on. A way to wear a different area of the spacer to get more life from the part.
These two no money tricks can extend the life of a very wore shifter for a long time. Just be careful not to grind to much from the sleeve or it will lock up when you tighten the pivot bolt. This sleeve and the cover plate is what sets the width of the shifter box. Of course if you make this space to small the levers will be to tight.

Thanks a lot ill check the bolts and may take it out and inspect the shims, id say there prob is a 1/4" of play side to side

One of the shims is actually a little "wavy" from the get go. It can flatten out and make the slop worse.

The side-slop, if it is not affecting the 2-3 shift, I wouldn't take the time to change it, unless the rattle becomes unbearable. That's what the wavy plate is for; to prevent rattle. That plate is pretty hard for how thin it is. My shifter is from the 70's, and that plate is not worn to any meaningful degree. Yeah the last time I looked,it had shiny spots, but not meaningful wear. However the waves do tend to flatten out over 40plus years . And although it's somewhat difficult to reshape the plate,it can be done.
As to the actual stick-play, "ssba" hit that pretty good.
If you decide to take the mech apart, take pictures, lots of pics. For such a simple device, it's pretty complicated to reassemble correctly. It's easy to put one shim in wrong, or one lever in,out-of-place, and then you get to start over. Make sure to bench-shift it several times to make sure you got it right!

Brewers sells new shims, including the shim with the bend.
after time the shim with the bend flattens, creating a loose, rattling shifter.

It doesnt affect shifting, just seems weird i just now noticed it but may have been that way the whole time. I guess its better to have play then be too tight, im going to double check the box bolts and reset the adjustment by putting that pin in the line up hole and adjusting the shift rods, since it seems i have to do that every year anyway, may just leave it, if its not affecting shifting then i guess no reason to take it apart, i forget its 40 years old lol

Contact Hurst, they have a program to rebuild your mechanism and it is real reasonable.
