DA Sander

I'm running a Hutchins. A little pricey but worth every penny. I also have a Cornwell which has held up good. My Snap On ended up unfixable.......

for strange shaped spots and no blaster, you might find useful a big wire CUP on a right angle grinder. aircraft stripper in some places useful BUT be sure there is no r esidue in any cracks or your primer might not adhere.
I admit I have run some cheap DA's forever but that was before everything was made in China. I picked up the highest (HA ) priced DA at HF last year. it ran once for a few minutes and died! ha
paid $40 for another one somewhere else and it still runs after completely doing 3 cars with it. go figure??
\ like he said, quality is great.... I like buying quality stuff but not always proves to be a must. just me.

Thanks everyone. I think I am going to go with a middle of the road. Not super cheap, but not crazy expensive. This is just a hobby, not a profession.

X2 on Hutchins da's and straighlines. Also have an old craftsman thats 25 + old, and one of the hf ones I bought while working at someone else's shop. The taller handle style like the IR posted are generally more aggresive sanders, and the palm style a little smoother action for finish work. The grey $40 hf one has worked fine for me , it's 4-5 years old and I dont have to worry about it sprouting legs. A better pad will make a difference on any of them.

For confined areas like the engine compartment, a 3" DA sure is handy.

No advice on a DA, but since you will be doing a lot of hand sanding in the engine compartment......check all of the spot welds to see if any have a jagged edge. More than once, I've had a jagged spot weld rip a hunk out of the sandpaper, and subsequently my finger! Now, I take a few minutes to look for them and knock them down with a die grinder. The jagged ones are usually around the shock tower. Good luck, and this has been a public service announcement! :D

DA Sanders.... Doesn't he do the commercials for KFC....

All Hutchins, all the time, DA's and air boards. Completely rebuildable. I've had the same units for 35 years.

That said, Dynabrade is also up there.
