every year i try to go out of my way to build something special for a member of my family.

last year i built my Father a bench from an old Dodge tail gate.

this year I will be building a lighted sign for my father in law's man cave. He is a retired Marine that now serves as a police officer here in Washington state. His man cave is actually a barn that he has converted into the ultimate man cave. has separate rooms for Poker, theater, bar and his "Marine" room.

So i started looking for designs online and this is the design that i chose.

I then drew it up on CAD.

when i traced the outline in CAD it was pretty screwed up. I had to change the design slightly but it cleaned up well.

then i printed it out to see how it looked.

then i sent the file over to a buddy that has access to a water jet.

i had it cut out of 12ga. cold rolled steel.

The plan now is to build a small 1-1/2" deep box behind the plate. this will house the wiring for my led lighting. I have a sheet of transparent red acrylic that i will be attaching behind the design face. this will create a lighted wall sign that will glow red thru the cut outs. should look pretty cool.

will post more as it progresses.

That's awesome. First I thought you were going to etch blast it onto a mirror or glass. I like what you decided.

I've seen a bunch of your projects and you sure are an ambitious, innovative guy. You need to be careful, somebody will start calling you an "artist," and we wouldn't want that!! LOL

Ha ha ha I'm no artist! Just a blue collar guy that is always looking for an excuse to build something. That and everything out there that is massed produced is just plain garbage for quality.

a gift where the giver puts the time and work and love, to make that, should mean way more than just forking over some $$ for a store bought piece of crap!!????

Gifts like yours are the ones that are kept and handed down thru the family along with the story that goes with it.

Here is the piece I made for the girlfriend. She enjoys wine and has collected the corks for some time now. I made this wine cork holder out of a used wine barrel. I cut it and disassembled it. Took the lid out and replaced with a piece of plexi glass. Then built the back panel from some wainscoting. I even made the cork plug for the top. Now she can put her corks on display up on the wall

Great job on all of it..

I can tell you that my wife would love that wine barrel piece you made.. I've been trying to find a barrel, but there are just none available. I've even checked with the local winery's.

You just keep on amazing me with your skills, yes ! an artist for sure with allot of for thought
