So I busted a hole in the factory radiator the other day. I've needed to replace it for a while but now it's absolutely unavoidable. :p

I'm looking at Champion Radiators and the site says their 22" 2-row radiator (EC2374) is good up to 375 hp. I would be surprised if I'm much over 200 (but I've never been on a dyno and can't guestimate for crap)

Still unsure, I gave them a call and the guy on the phone confirmed that for a super mildly built 318 street engine, it should do just fine.

Now just to be absolutely certain... Is there anybody here running this particular radiator?

Info on my car: '72 Dart Custom Sedan, super mildly built 318, a904 with an external cooler.

Damn. Finally get a response literally 1 minute after I placed my order. haha

Well I guess I'll be the guinea pig for this one. :p

Thanks for the input anyway mopowers. I figure the AL 2-row will be quite a bit better than stock and my stock radiator did an okay job even though it was pretty darn haggard (cap flange was cracked, corrosion galore, etc.).

Cross your fingers for me folks, I'm going in head first! lol

I went 2 row, 22" on mine and then fabbed 99 - 02 ford contour / Mercury mistique dual electric fans..

A little bit of fab work but it looks amazing.

Thanks for easing my mind a bit Bruce!

I'm planning on going fan shopping at pick'n'pull once the radiator gets here and modify it to fit.

Don't suppose you've got any pictures of your setup? :)

Used a Dakota radiator, besides drilling 2 small holes for the bottom and coming up with a top mount, it works great! But, this post will be ignored, what you want to bet?

Did I miss something????

I'd go ahead and get the 3-row unit just for some wiggle room. How much thicker is it, 1/2"?

I have a 2 core in my duster and on my engine test stand, no overheating issues ever.

When I researched mine several years ago, the 3 cores were only like 1/4 thicker than the two cores.
The 2 cores have 1" row of fins and the 3 core only had 3/4" row of fins in it.

put the fans on a switch to turn them off/on, aftermarket relay was crap.

fans stayed on and temp never reached 160..So needless to say, I am happy as hell with the fans and the radiator choice.

All of the research was done here for my decisions.

Thanks awesome Bruce! Big thanks for the pictures. :)

^^^ The Contour fan setup sounds pretty good... much better than the cheap, thin-bladed fans being sold so often. You need a good relay.... running below 160F all the time is not the best for an engine; internals may not heat up and expand as they should (pistons in particular) and combustion can be less complete. T'stat won't open very much at all (unless you have a 160 t'stat), and then flow will be low and it can be more prone to hot spots developing in the heads. It probably will get warm enough to get the condensation driven out unless you don't drive very far.

I guess I'll update here.

Installed the radiator, and actually ended up using the crappy chrome Summit fan that was on the car when I bought it. Haven't overheated once since install. It actually keeps the temp almost too low. Probably gonna change out the thermostat soon so I have a working heater in the morning.

Been wondering if that 2-row 22" radiator will work for my 400HP smallblock and keep it cool during the California summer.

Update,

goofy installer ( me) tied the 12+ and the AC trigger wire tigether and went to 12v switched..

This is why the fans would not turn off..

called Hayden and they were able to set me straight.

Now the fans come on at the temp degree that they are supposed to and shut off at the correct bottom end temp.

:)

I ran a 2-row Champion on my Daily driven 273 (est 225ish HP) in city traffic for a few years. Never had a problem.

having a big block, i went with the biggest core that would fit and I'm really happy with the way it worked out. i think it is the 26" wide 2 core core champion. It just fits between the factory overflow and battery tray. never gets hot, even when i took it to florida in the dead of summer.

Hey Batman, what should I expect to pay for the Contour fans? Any other parts I need to make sure I grab with it? Any hints for making install easier?

I know you can buy reproduction contour fans for about $100 on rock auto...but I actually suggest you get junkyard ones. Just get it and the harness.

If you get a dakota digital fan controller, two 70A relays, and a 60A maxi fuse, and some 10 ga wire...it's quite easy.

I had never seen them on a 22" radiator. I guess so long as you don't mind it hanging over the edge (and plug the gap off),it should be fine.

I used it on the 26" champion. I've had a lot of people ask for the how-to.

Mine works super well. Seamless.

I have a 3 core 22" champion in a 68 340, 350 hp, i have a clutch fan and shroud, temperature gets to 210 in a traffic situation in the summer. I plan on adding A/C next year and i will have to add a large electric fan with a temp. controller, I figure :banghead:a/c will cause temp to increase at least 10 degrees, any suggestions appreciated.
