Anyone tired of this ???

The only thing I don't do is body and paint. Not because I can't, but because it make such a dern Mess. I like my shop to stay somewhat clean. Plus I hate sandpaper !! LOL
 
who gives a **** if someone bought or built their car as long as they are out and enjoying it.

if you really think about it, the smart thing to do is to buy one that someone else put all the money into and is taking the loss on and tweaking things to make it yours.. best of both worlds there..


as far as magazines go. i stopped getting mopar ones years ago.. they suck.. only thing they are good for these days is to see the latest products out . years ago ya needed them for tech articles. these days the internet is faster and has a lot more information then a magazine can have in a single issue. the other thing is how much more can be written about these old cars? its all been covered hasn't it. now modern electronics and all is where its at and thats probably where tech articles should be going..

I say that they should actually look for these stories...even maybe set a reporter to troll this site...

true story.. few years ago i'm standing talking with the editior of mopar enthusiast magazine. he was looking for a car to feature... i mentioned a cool dart or valiant that was pretty stock looking but under the hood was a slant 6 with a turbo. i thought it was a neat car and it was different.. he couldn't care less. he was more interested in the high dollar cars that every other magazine was going after. just the way it is..


as far as trolling this site. doubt it will happen.. this site has a bad reputation around other boards as being the cheapest bunch around.. and magazines don't want cheap..lol again. just the way it is..

Funny this topic has popped up again..

We have shown Lafaunda in a bunch of car shows..and have listed all we have done on a placard out front.. ..the biggest comment we have gotten is why we didn't spring for a show quality paint job ?? Ah, because we drive it all 9 months of the year ??? And, we cannot afford one however, we will take donations.. :) The paint is good but I have seen many photographers skip our car.. life is too short..my son has no interest in showing anymore ..

On the flip side, the very original and complete '70 GTX of my neighbors , who is restoring it by checkbook, after going through 2 restoring companies, still isn't finished.. I think he said he has over 10K tied up in just the engine rebuild alone..and his son has absolutely no interest in it..

I have stopped reading MOPAR mags..would prefer to drive anyway and when I need information that I cannot find, I come to the best source..here.

huh - I just read 90% of this thread and as per usual, the opinions are all over place - and we all know what they say about opinions and a$$holes... Anyway, many years ago I bought a good to go, running 1983 Harley.. ran it for a year or so without anything more than a seat upgrade - I was proud as hell to own it and ride it. Then I took a mind to change some things - took it down to bare frame, replaced and upgraded a bunch of things, had my best friend paint the tins for me (I paid him) and put it all back together myself.. when I was done I was (and still am) extremely proud of that bike.
You folks see my car? I bought it done. Why? Because I could. Now don't get me wrong, I can, do and will turn the wrenches - it's something I enjoy doing. What's my point in all this? Some people enjoy getting dirty and having a hand in the finished product and some, well... not so much, they would rather pay someone else and just enjoy the finished product. Either way - you do what makes you happy and gets you to the finished product :cheers:. Do I think there's more pride in doing yourself - you betcha. BUT, ultimately "we" are all enjoying the hobby and saving old iron - albeit in our own way - hey, it's all good. Oh - as for the magazines - no subscriptions here, I breeze over them in the store and decide if it looks interesting enough to buy or not. JM2c
 
I appreciate the effort taken to put a car into a certain state when it was on it's way to dead. But that said - I place a much different value on doing it, even if it's not perfect, than having the means to only direct and pay for it. My opinion is anybody with the money can pay for it. There are few that can actually do it themselves. I'll never believe a paid for car has the same value as an owner built. Even if the quality is sub par. Sweat and blood on the car itself are always worth more than a dollar to me. Paying for it lowers the personal energy required to the same thing as utility and cell phone bills.

you will be a true believer when it comes time to sell either of them. you'll see the reality of that sub par work.
 
... magazines are a thing of the past, a dying breed.

as fewer and fewer eyes and consumer dollars are spent on print, they HAVE to become more and more commercialized.
 
The hobby I love is building, working and Driving My Mopars. I DID buy my Hellcat, only because I wanted one! I do believe there is a place for check writers in our hobby. And I dont get mags anymore.

Magazines are intended to show off the rare beasts and inspire the hobbyist to build their own. They are mostly funded by advertising and intended to sell the advertiser's products to the enthusiast working on their own dream in their own garage.

They aren't designed to be "judgmental" publications...they're intended to be "inspirational" publications.

I just wish they would show more of the backyard ride builds for inspiration along side the high-dollar ones instead of tucking them into the back pages.

I don't subscribe to any of them anymore (haven't for 20 years) but I do pick them up once in a while...just to keep my finger on the pulse.

OK, next up, who here remembers Rick Dobberton's J2000 ?? Anybody?? The mags
swooned and waxed and fawned over this ugly over the top useless POS !! That was in
the very early 80's,and really,nothing has changed. Actually,that's not true,now those
types of cars are expected to actually turn killer times and usually do! I may be wrong,
and someone who knows better may correct me,but I believe Dobberton tried to run
that thing and it went 13's and I'm not sure if it ever did any better TMK.
I subscribe to MCG,I believe they are true DIY guys,and support us and our hobby.
True, they feature celebrities and manufacturers,but these things help keep our hobby
alive.CP also has been there long time,and is making a comeback mag-wise,sure they
have ads & promote new products.If no one sees or buys new products for our rides,
no one will make them for our rides,why would they?
I agree that it seems like the avg. featured car costs 2-3X what an avg home costs
anymore,and there are not "sweat equity" featured cars enuff,but the readers are the
ones who need to voice that and demand it. I have friends/customers who have had
cars featured in MM etc. , and I have had My own photo'd as part of event coverage
by a couple(CP & MCG),and I can tell you even tho' they didn't do the body/paint work
they had plenty of mech./assy. labor in them!! These mags are talking to legends and
helping to document Mopars history as well,and I enjoy those articles,so I will still buy
My MCG sub.,and pick up MA,MM,and CP off the stands, this forum is just a great way
for us to hook-up our community and communicate.THAT,is a big plus to us as well.
 
I just skimmed this thread so I cant speak with authority, but I dropped all my magazine subscriptions except "Hot Rod" Got tired of looking at cars that are not part of my reality. I do appreciate them though and anyone who has made the money to "write the check" has my respect. I preferred to do all my own work when I was 16 and I still prefer to do all my own work. But at my age, it is a lot harder and slower but I do have more money to do it so maybe it is a tradeoff. I like my Barracuda but I am not a Mopar specific guy, I like all of the obscure little loved cars that I can make hot rods out of. My next project will be a pre-1950 shop truck rat rod with 400 HP. Ultimately for me it comes down to how I want to get my therapy and spend my time, which is a far rarer commodity for me than money.

I'm going with Joe on this one! Since this is a "hobby", everyone has their place, you rail about "trailer queens" and the "checkbook" guys but for some reason you say nothing of the "cheap bastards" that insist on buying low dollar parts then complain about quality! Joe is absolutely correct when he stated that this site is known for cheap. Do you really want to know why the aftermarket is not beating down your door???? CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP!!! There are lots of good and NOS parts out there,must I expound on why they don't surface??? It goes without saying that a blind man on a runaway jackass can see all the cheap and bling parts you proudly show on your cars.

I think you are confusing wanting to buy a complete car and able to. There is a difference. Many of us have lives and hobbies that car not car related.

I see zero pride of ownership when you buy complete. I bought a new Mustang gt back in early '08. Love the car. Done a little bit to it but there is no pride to having it on the road...however, it is fun...

I could have let someone else do the work on the Duster. Would it made any difference of how I felt about the car. Yup... and a big difference when I drive it ..lets call it fun X4 knowing that we did all the work on it....one is just a car...when you have hands on it, it is more..

Am I impressed with the dud that just spent big bucks on a car..no, they are a dime a dozen..throw a stick at in any car show and you will hit a bunch...aren't there more billionaires around now.. ?? . have you noticed how many 500K plus Class A's there are on the road.. ? doesn't meant I am not impressed with the car. There is a big difference.

It is just like the folks who say that they "built" their house and when you dig deeper, you found out that they painted a few rooms and wrote the cheques..

Doing is impressive..buying, not so much..

On an aside, I have a neighbor that is a real wheeler dealer..makes gobs of $... he has everything in his driveway over the years from Porches to harleys. he doesn't keep them long.. not sure if he even enjoys them..

But regardless of what i or others think, do what ever floats you boat..you time and your money going into in...

Holy smokes - I do remember that thing!! At the time it was amazing - I remember being stunned - of course I was a kid (teens) and had just gotten my first Dart and was probably higher than a friggin kite too... (cool tricks with a Frisbee impressed me too so... LOL) in retrospect - that car faded quick and until RIGHT now, i had completely forgotten about it..

Well, in the first place I don't know that people would be interested enough in my builds to put them in a magazine. And I work on them when I have time.
So there is that.

I rarely have paid someone to do something in life that I could have done myself and been happy with the paid results.
I've built my own cars.
Everything but rebuild engines .
I don't build the engines.
As the saying goes: "I'm good enough to know what I can't do".
I don't have the time, tools or space to do it right the first time, for sure.
Doesn't an engine need machine work usually?
Well, then I'm not really "building" an engine anyway.
I'm just "assembling" an engine.
But that is semantics perhaps.
I've seen people build their own engines and have to pull them back out for something like bad ring gap.
Too much work involved for that.

All that being said, if any aftermarket manufacturer wants to take over and build me a car to use for advertisement, I would be happy to let them.
I've got two going now and I could use the help.
 
There are plenty of guys on here doing their own "restorations". I wouldn't call mine a restoration, it will be getting the wheels driven off it once it's complete. If I was just going the shell out some cash for a car I would probably buy a newer one. That is 3/4's of the fun with old cars, building them up from a pile of scrap... Here's a few of mine

yes after scanning the 3 pages, yes we all have our opinions, and that's good.

I have had many Mopars over the decades, I love doing all the work on them I can, and buying a done car at this point in life is not feasible.

I have bought a few pretty nice "done" cars that I enjoyed driving, but NO real pride in it. I had pride in the work my friend did to it though, since I always new the local P O.

I admit I have a somewhat distorted opinion of wealthy people. been cheated and mistreated by some. but I appreciate the fact they wrote the check to save the car, for whatever their reason, be it:
A. I want it.... B. I want one better than my asshole rich buddy C. simply ego trip. D. hoping to sell it to my rich buddy and screw him really bad with a huge profit... D. hopefully they love these old cars and the hobby, and the little guy that makes up 98% of it! .................. et c etc....

mags. only mag I respect is M A and that is because of the tech articles. I havn't bought one In how many years (decades)????? used to read them all in" the thinking room!"

the mags!?? wayyy back as the FIRST mopar market was crashing in '91 some think '92. the mags kept telling everyone in their "articles" how the market was SOoooooo strong!!!! lets face it... it had already tanked, and the mags wanted to help the rich "investors" bail before too late!!??????? my take.....

everyone knows what SHOT the price sky high so quick as the interest in old musclecars was just starting in mid 80's , was the fall of Wall ST in "88. the rich jumped in the rare car scene because they knew there was $$$ to be made and they were looking for alternative investments.

then the old car market crashes......"91..... I kept seeing them s ell their " big dollar restored RARE mopar" to their rich buddy/friend/ acquantance.......before too late! ha ha

yes not everyone has the talent or time to do their own work, I have no problem with that; BUT you can always tell the people that REALLY love the cars and the hobby for what it is, whether they turn their own wrenches or just wish they could. and there are some wealthy guys in the hobby that truly love this hobby. and I have no problem with them either. ( as long as they are not screwing someone to put another $$$ in their bank acct). just me....

I'm kinda happy those check writers are out there! Once the tooling costs are recouped on the latest gizmo then the prices start to fall in the realm the rest of us can afford...

Absolutely correct! Know your limitations! It is sad to go to car shows where you look at the "cheapsters"cars and they start blasting others that have more money or ability. If you really feel you love the hobby and have done your best you have no reason to degrade other people's cars. I like seeing old cars, no matter if it is a local show or Pebble Beach.
 
Malibu, doesn't matter to me how people get their hot rods. I just respect the guys whose stuff maybe isn't quite as nice if they build it themselves. If its nicer than old boy who paid through the nose it's one of those I told you so moments...
