How to tell what type of Transmission I have

I was wondering the type of transmission i had behind my slant 6. Its a 3 spd, originally "3 on the tree". Thanks in advance
 
Look at the drivers side of the transmission where the shift levers are, if there is a bolt on cover where the shift levers stick out of the trans it's an a230, if no bolt on side cover it's an a903.
 
Can you shift into first gear while moving, or does it grind more like reverse?
