Hi,

I'm thinking in rebuild my current rear brake system. So my big concern is: what's the best system to use with footbrake? Disc or drum?

Currently my car has 3300lbs, no brake booster just master cylinder and a Boss Hog converter 2800-3200 stall.

Thanks

I use drums currently. They seems to work just fine for me. There is another guy at the track with the demon that switched to rear disc, and said he regrets it. I dont remember the reason though. Sorry!

I also heard for foot brake drum brakes is better.

I'd love to know who comes up with this crap?

I log this in the data bank of Mallory Dual points are the best ignition you can buy. Mechanical fans cool much better than electric fans. Etc...

Drum brake will work just fine.

True, they will, as will discs.

Both of my darts ended up with discs in the rear after I swapped to the bigger bolt pattern.

The first set was from TSM the current set is from willwood.

I have heard from SEVERAL people that changed to disc and they said Drum brakes on the back hold better at the starting line when foot braking. They said they stop better but do not hold the car at the line as good.

How do the brakes know what is pressing on them?

I'd also like to know what size piston MC they use? The biggest mistake people often make with manual brakes is too large of a piston, requiring more foot pressure.

I don't thing drum or disk is the answer. Line lock is!:D
yes i have drums........no i don't have a line lock#-o

If you wanted to put the time and effort in to it a third pedal with a pinion brake is the best way it holds the car much better but you can't use it to stop with on the big end only to hold the car on the starting line

I launch off the foot brake without my line lock.

I cringe at the thought of brake stands for doing burnouts at the track and the irony of discussing rear brakes while burning your pads off doing brake stands.

I went to 4 wheel discs on my racecar and I can stage it much more consistently now. Duster still has rear drums and I am sure they will work fine, just depends on how aggressively you intend to stage the car and compete. My vote is manual disc / disc in a racing setup hands down

cam action of the brake shoes will hold at a stand still better..... I've actually been shopping around for rear disc set ups and noted one of the manufacturers mentioned in their literature that the disc set up would not work as well as drum for footbrake racing.

The ironic part is 99.9% of the people out there have discs in the front, drums in the rear and do burnouts with line lock. (front brakes only)

So tell me again how rear discs affect the ability to hold the car in one place?

Clamping pressure, my 4 piston rear discs bite a little tighter than my old 10" drums did. Sure the drums had more pad to surface area, but the strange pro race discs are working out nicely

Most people do burn outs with wet tires. At the starting line I try to foot brake stall as high a rpm as I can. Most I can do is 28-3000 at the line.

What's your convertor stall at? Dynamic recommended to me to bring it up to a high idle on the brake and let the converter flash. I run a 3500 stall. If I bring it up higher to where it is trying to push the car my 60ft suffers as does my ET.

It only foot brakes to 28-3000, but it flashes to over 5000. It is a 8 in PTC. Best 60 ft 1.33 so far. I do not have a trans brake.

I have found that getting a run on the stall converter get me better 60' then max stalling the converter on the line.

It hook best from a idle................but then my reaction time really suck!#-o

I agree about the reaction time. That is the main reason I stall mine as much as I can.

Leave earlier on the he tree. I know, I know these new LED trees many of the tracks have gone to suck and are so much harder to judge.

Drums on the rear are the way to go for drag racing. When you release the brakes the return springs pull the shoes away from the drums right away. No drag. On disks the pucks are released from pressure but still drag somewhat on the rotor. Drag..If you think you need larger brakes swap to standard C-body drum set up in the rear. Had this on my first Duster. Wow, what an improvement.
