I got a shifter in a trade and I'm not sure of it's application. I think I know what it fits but I wanted to get some other opinions. It pivots a little different from the ones I'm used to, like from the '70's, and the shifter arm leans forward more than I'm used to. Anybody seen this before? Thanks in advance.

Without part numbers, and "even then" I'd say no way to know.

After all Hurst made shifters, both OEM and aftermarket, to fit most U.S. cars for decades.

it appears to be a 64-5 a body shifter from the looks of the shifter stem
JMO :burnout:

That's what I was thinking after scanning the net, I knew someone here would know. It has a big lean toward the dash for the handle and when you align the holes in the levers, the reverse lever sits rearward rather than lined up with the others.

It's a Mopar, I've rebuilt quiet a few of the '70's versions. It's just weird to have the reverse lever tilt reward in the alignment position....? The shift stops seem to be on aftermarket shifters. The factory shifters don't have them from what I've seen.

Definitely not for that, the shift levers are too long & doesn't have shift stops to start with. Maybe not for a mopar?

The early Hurst shifters had stops, they got rid of them later, probably a cost savings.

Not true.
I have a 65 factory Hurst 4 spd Dart.
All original.
The shifter has no stops.

Highly unlikely your shifter is original. Have owned / seen multiple original 64-65 Hurst shifters (A, B, & C-body) & all had stops. The factory service manuals for those years illustrate the stops & also provide the adjustment procedure. Mopar eliminated the stops when they reintroduced Hurst shifters in 1968 but they can be easily added if so desired. The original replacements that Hurst did/ still sell all have the stops. One thing I recall the early factory shifters had was a stamping "patent pending".

I'll be able to get some numbers later today, thanks.

There were no part numbers stamped on the factory Hurst shifters, at least on the earlier cars. Can't comment on post '71, not my area of interest. If anyone's really interested, can post a 65 B-body shifter that I'm currently pulling the motor from, I may also have a pic of a 65 A-body somewhere. C-bodies are identical to B-bodies.

At your convenience, pics would be great.

Here's what I've got as far as numbers and pics:

5-5-M-5

and the levers:

I may have found something that I should have thought of sooner:

http://www.brewersperformance.com/proddetail.asp?prod=SM-EARLY

SM-EARLY REBUILT HURST SHIFTER MECHANISM 1964-65 A/B BOLT-ON
Rebuilt/replated original equipment Hurst shifter mechanism for all 1964-65 models using bolt-on style handles (A-body on left 2 3/4" tall tower, B-body on right 1 3/4" tall tower). Price is EXCHANGE with like, rebuildable core. Core charge applies.

On second thought I'm doing a 180. Apologies mojack. That is an early A shifter, although it looks like it's been painted. They must not have put the stops on the A's, can't believe I didn't remember that as I've rebuilt & seen several. Here's the only pic I have of mine, it's in deep winter storage. By part numbers I meant the 7 digit mopar ones, those shown look like Hurst numbers.

Well gee wilikers, look at that. No Factory stops on the 64-65 A body shifter.

Measure the top lever, and match it with Brewers measurement. Looks like an early A like I mentioned earlier.

Thanks guys, it looks like a wrap on this one. The irony of this is that I converted my '65 Val. to a 4 speed using a later run of the mill hurst shifter.:burnout:
