Stock 340 Dart on dyno

This is a stock 340 Dart Swinger that I got. Only pulled 204hp but has potential for more. All original. Sat for 34 years in California before I got it running again."
 
Interesting. Assuming the factory rating of 275 hp, deducting 25% drivetrain loss = 206 hp. Pretty close...
 
Thanks for the thread. It's hard to believe they ran so well with only 200 ponies to the ground.

It so easy to make HP now days I think people get their eyes are bigger than their belly type thing. A lot of people thinking they need minimum 400 hp to have a fast car.
Not to long ago 5.0 l mustang was considered a hot car and that thing barely made 200 hp at the crank lol.
Id like to go big block in my 65 cuda but by time you rebuild it with an eddy top end and a decent cam your well over 500 hp without trying. You almost have to build 273/318 to keep it on the mild side.

some builds go long duration cam,big port heads,big carb etc which make an impressive hp number (at high rpm) but idle quality and lo rpm power can be disappointing without a gear and a converter.

I concur
The way I see it if you ain't gonna gear it don't build especially with small displacement. You either got to build torque in the engine ( displacement) or in the gearing. Most run 3.23:1-3.55:1 that's what they should design their engine around that's why 408 are so popular.

Yep, I read about all the 12 second cars that guys have here.....it was not so easy 40 years ago. You couldn't buy heads flowing 240-250 cfm OOTB on your credit card. 14 seconds was pretty good then.....

back then low 13's were rare!
