1968 Match Race ~ Barracuda 340-S vs. Camaro SS 350

Yes I do. Years ago i did a minor tune on a stock 59' 283 Vette with a solid cam. I assume it was a 097? It was a pretty fast car. Had two Carters, was a 4spd, not sure of the rear gear, but it felt like a 13sec car. One other was a high school friend with a stock 69' Z/28. It had the standard 3.73 rear and seemed really soft on the low end. It was a beautiful car, but i'd say it felt like it would run about 15 flat on a good day. I think to be a bruiser, it really needed a 4.56 gear to keep up with a lot of the cars of the day. The one car that had a factory solid in it that was bad assed, was my buddies 65' Vette with a crate 70' LT-1 and a 4.56 rear. That car went a few 12's with tires and Hooker sidepipe headers. That is until it tossed a half shaft...lol.

Too Many Chevy's

Camshafts

* '300 HP'... .399"/.399" = 327 Chevy {300 and 250 HP} and 283 Chevy {220 HP}
* '929'........ .390"/.410" = 350 Chevy {300, 295 and 255 HP} and 327 Chevy {275 and 210 HP}
* '962'....... .450"/.460" = 350 Chevy {L-46 and L-82}
* '151'....... .447"/.447" = 327 Chevy {350 and 325 HP}
* '346'....... .485"/.485" = 302 Chevy {Z-28} 'Mechanical'

Was GM fudging their numbers or was Chrysler?

Both. Why? Back in the day some guys (single, under 25) were paying more for car insurance than they were in car payments. The car companies were all leery of trying to sell a 300 hp compact car with that kind of insurance burden at the end of the 60s. (~ 10 lb / 1 hp). IMO, Mopar played it smart and left room for development (AAR-T/A) and still keep the HP under 300. It was pretty clear that if Motown went into a horsepower war in the compact class, the sales numbers wouldn't justify the development costs.

LOL. I recall one guy back in the day (owned a 68 Cuda 340S, 4-speed) who claimed that the only way Mopar could get 275 out of the 340 was to disconnect the linkage to the secondaries.

With a SBC, you pay extra for the stuff that comes standard on the Chrysler LA engine.
*6 inch rods
*Deep skirted block that clears stroker cranks easier
*Shaft mounted rocker arms

The only advantage to the sbc is maybe the valve/pushrod angle and of course cheaper. I still stand tall saying the LA engine is a better engine.

Don't forget 18 degree valves too.

another informative thread from Paul aka 69 440 cuda.
thank you for the time you shared.

I see Joey made Paul a legendary member, too. Thanks Joey. We miss you, Paul.

What what what?

Did we lose 69 cuda 440?

No way.

didn`t read all these posts, but I bought a new 68 form S 383 back then, and it would smoke a "hugger"-camaro as they were called back then. ran off and left one in the Ozarks.

R.I.P,Paul.. That 273 "old school cam test,by E.T." absolutely was the best thread, I ever read here....
