so I'm looking at a set of 14 inch rims for my duster
the car is a 71, with a 408/727-8.75 and 3.23 gears
I think 235 is the widest I can fit?

some of the tires ive come across are hankooks, coopers, and B.F.goodrich
is either of those better?
or is there another option?

I've found Pep Boy's Futura GLS Super Sport to work pretty good on a street car. Cooper Tire makes them.
The BFGs and Hankooks are hard as a rock and worthless on damp roads.

I also came across a "delta national road max"
white letter tire, rated up to 190 MPH

I have a set of Mastercraft (they might be made by Cooper) Avenger GT's in 14's on my Dart and they ride and handle very well.

Why not go 15 and save some headaches? Even those are getting more difficult, but it does give a broader choice.

I keep asking myself that
I had one lead on a set of 15 inch rims, but that member hasn't gotten back to me

I figured if I were to buy the rims I want new, in 15 inch, I'm looking at about 620 dollars (free shipping)
if I can get a used set in 14 for, say, 300 shipped, that is almost enough saving over new to buy the first set of tires...almost

but if I could find a used set of 15/8 slotted mags, in SMALL bolt pattern, I would be all over that

Tall order, lol. Everybody wants an arm and a leg for em.

Are you looking for all 4, or just the rears right now?

I would prefer all four
but, if you have a lead on two, I could see myself going with 15s in the back, and 14s up front...somehow I don't expect to chance the front tires near as often as the rears

What's the rim width?

You don't gain anything with a wide tire on a narrow rim...

I think 235 is the widest u can fit with out any mods on the back..for the front maybe 225. I have a pair of centerline American racing rims with decent tiresome sale but I'm located near LA California.. Tire size on those are 235 60 r15. They were on my 67 valiant when I bought it but they would rub on the inside of the wheel well . I have stock shocks maybe some hi jacker shocks could of helped ... But I like the stock look so I switched them out for the cool steelies

Take a look at Coker Tires. They specialize in classic car tires so they have a good selection of 14" radial tires. They have several widths of white stripes or red stripes if you are trying to match the original look.

I bought a set of 14" Maxxis from their site for my Barracuda and got a 7/8" white wall. I got the widest tire that would fit on the factory 4.5" wide rims. They were able to ship from a Western warehouse location which saved a lot of money on shipping charges.

Ive always run cooper cobras. They're cheap, wear good, and they will have the size your looking for. As other people said cooper makes tires for several other companies. They make mickey thompson sportsmans also.

Check Tire Buyer.com, they have always been good to me. Found a great deal on 14's there a couple years ago.

I believe the set I'm looking at right now are 14/7s
if I were to buy a brand new set, I would look at 15/8

I feel body colored steelies are a close second to slotted mags
never cared much for the look of the centerlines

I want to say something in a non-critical way; so please don't take offense;
Since even a teener will blow through just about anything on a 14 x 8; why are you considering these for your 408? If you cannot fit wides in the wells, tall will accomplish more. So if you can fit 28s in there instead of 25s, that would be the way to go. Working the formula backwards; I see that 28s on 14s would be; 235/75-14s on 6.5s are 27.9 and 255/70-14 on 7.0s are 28 tall.
The tall narrow tire will put a similar sized patch on the road to a low fat tire, but the patch is in the direction of travel, and grows rapidly when airing down, which I imagine would be very beneficial to a 408.
Of course these tire sizes can be translated to 15s too. And IMO big and littles is very cool. IIRC the 70 AARs and TAs were big and littles;right on the showroom floor.
To fit a 28s on 15s would be;
235/70-15 on 6.5s@27.95 tall, or 245/70-15 on 7s@28.5, or 255/65-15 on 6.75s @28.05, or 265/60-15s on 7.5s@27.52, or 275/60-15s on 7.6s @28.0. All rim sizes are the 70%-checking rims and according to the literature could be plus/minus 1 inch. I recommend rounding up to the next closest 1inch,at least.
I realize that there are no factory 15s in sbp, so you might as well spring for new wheels. And when you do that you can maximize your rim width and center them in the tubs. Wheel Vintiques will sell you a primered rally wheel in almost any combination you like, for almost dirt cheap.

I ran 275/60-15s, on 8.5s, for a couple of years, on the stock rear end in my 68 Barracuda. The aluminum slot-mags mightabin 4.5 bs. On the 8.5s I was able to run pressures from 24 to 30 on the street. The first summer BFGs or Coopers do pretty good. But once you burn them down to something like 70 tread left, then it seems you get into a harder base compound, and a lot of traction disappears. They stop squealing too. And then they won't smoke up anymore either. So they tell you when they're done, loud and clear.

interesting read AJ, I do appreciate it
its one of those deals where I'm trying to match form and function

if I can fit a 275 tire in a stock spring duster, that would be great
(there seem to be some different opinion out there, and I'm sure backspacing may be critical here)
if I cant, then maybe going to 15 inch may not help as much anyway

it looks like hankook still offers that size tire in a 15 inch, that's good
would that tire fit on a 8 inch rim?

I would really enjoy getting a set of these used, specially since I like the dull aluminum look better then the new polished

Well if you lived next door I would roll 'em over.

I think the WheelVintiques 15 x 8s,sbp, I ordered were about a $100 to $125 Usd each, in primer, with the custom spider install, in year 2004ish.

While the 275s will fit on a spec rim of 7.6 inches, I find they wear very nicely on 8.5s, and can run pressure of 24 to 32 no problem. I used to run them all weeh(DD) at 29, and then air 'em down for the weekend.
At 29Plus they corner pretty good. At 24 they stick better on the straights. At 32 they might save a bit of fuel on long trips.

If you install them on 8s, Ima guessing, it would be a bit of a compromise.Keep in mind also that a 275 is only a 275 when mounted on a rim of 70% of 275, which is the checking rim of 7.6 inches. On an 8 inch they will be a tad wider. Ima guessing 282, which is a section width of 11.1 inches. On an 8.5 they might be 11.4inches.
The limit in your wheelwell is not rim size. It is section width to springs, and section width to lips, and tread to front outer corner, and tread to the odd shaped curvature in the tops and fronts of the inner liners.
If I had a 408, I would be trying to fit 295s in there(they fit in my 68S).
But if I was not able to fit those, I would absolutely for sure be moving the springs over with the 3/4' offset hanger kits. This is cheap and easy and is good for 19 more millimeters, and it's all to the inboard side. Since other guys here IIRC, have successfully run 275s on Dusters, I imagine you can too.
The 70% checking rim for a 275(10.8section) is 7.6. The 60 series like an 8.5 rim, but I suppose an 8 will be fine.

So what exactly are you doing with your car ?
Are you ever planning on going to the strip, or just street ?
Planning on hitting the twisties, or are you going to the grocery store ?

thanks for all the info guys
I never had a car before where I needed to worry about getting the power to the road
I may have to consider the offset shackles (but it would be great if I didn't need to)

mostly a daily driver, bringing the kids to school, getting groceries, and driving myself to college (and that drive includes 20 miles of night time highway driving)

I am sure I will hit up the strip once the car is "done" to see what it will do, but it will be a street car by far

408 daily driver, kids to school, groceries ? Interesting.:burnout:

I would throw some T/A Radials on it.

Actually, I would get a Honda Accord. :D
