I flew in and drove my 65 Dart home, 400 miles, no issues. It was an eBay purchase and I didn't get to see the car beforehand. I did take some tools with me and these are simple cars.
On the other hand...you could easily spend 200 on gas and fluids. If airfare is another $200, that cuts your savings to $300. A breakdown and a tow and you're upside down. Are you taking time off work? What value do you put on your time?
