Tell me what exactly is a "slick shifted" tranny? Seems the 4 speeds in the hemi dart were modified by removing the synchros. True? Or? And lastly how would it be to drive in a street car? Thanks for any insight.

They have no longevity. Most would consider this mod to be damaging
today.
Face plating is better suited for the street and last much longer.
Both methods are thought of as a racing mod only since they can only be shifted
hard and fast once a trans has had this done to it. Built for full throttle shifts.

Well, What he said is true. But, Before I give you a run-down of street friendly version I developed for my box, I must ask 2 questions; 1)why do you want to know my secrets? and 2) have you tried the search button? There is a pretty detailed description I posted last year. Here are a couple of links, from the 4-spd forum

Anyone else use a crash box sometime?

Not wanting to know any secrets...lol. Just have an opportunity to buy a 833 that has been modified and wanted to know what it was all about. Looking for input on the transmission choice for my hemi dart clone. Search? What is this search thing you talk about....seriously I will take a look at your thread. Thanks for the replies.

It's kinda like driving a semi truck. Lol. You have to match your rpm when down shifting. Eric L

they can be driven, you have to double clutch to shift up, double clutch and blip throttle to down shift. old trucks and pickups had non syncro trans back in the day. like anything else, you learn how to make it work!!!! I ran a 833 on street and raced it. synthetic gear oil helps the life of them. the face plate requires same style of shifting, I have a jerico, I shift it same way, with out grinding gears!!! my wrist never did hurt!! wide open throttle, nothing shifts faster.

Back when i ran Saginaw 4spds in a street/strip car, i was slick shifting 2nd and 3rd which initially worked great. But after a few weeks of street driving, 3rd gear lugs would burr over slightly requiring the transmission to be torn down to remove the burrs. In an attempt to improve on that, i bought some TKO faceplate parts from Liberty that i used to modify my Saginaw's 3rd gear to faceplate.

Huge improvement...never had to dress 3rd gear again. When broke a 3rd gear, i'd cut the faceplate part from the broken 3rd gear and weld it onto a replacement gear.

Here's a pic of one of my Saginaw mainshafts, synchros on 1st and 4th, slick shifted 2nd, and faceplated 3rd...

To install the faceplate onto the Saginaw slider, i split the TKO slider with a cutoff wheel using a die grinder mounted to the tool holder on my lathe. Then it was a matter of machining a locating step to locate the parts properly, then welding them together. I even used a MIG welder instead of a TIG, never had a problem. Here's a pic of one side of a TKO faceplate slider MIG welded to the 2nd gear side of a Toploader slider...

That same slider is in my Toploader right now, been in there for several years of street/strip (1.30 60's on drag radials) without any problems at all.

Way past my capability...Think I will just call Brewer and get their setup...or just capitulate and install a auto...sigh...Thanks for the replies and knowledge.
