Question on floor opening for A T

Back in the 60s they used to sell an auto shifter that bolted onto the tranny and put the stick through the floor-hole. I haven't seen one in over 45 or 50 years.

This is kinda the same question I have also. I have all the shift linkage and brackets from another car, but how do I know exactly WHERE I am supposed to line up the shaft going through the floor...or am I just supposed to cut a big *** hole and then put the "boot ring" around it to seal it up? FYI, mine is a factory column shift auto.
