Been trying to clean my aluminum wheels. Made some progress. Would like some suggestions. They have polished spokes ( cleaned relatively easy ) the rest is a textured finish, similar to a very rough sand blasting . I want to clean the rough finish better then paint it black., leaving the polished finish. What product works best in your opinion? Also what prep and paint would be best on The aluminum . Do I need a primer ? If so what ? I would like to use a satin black finish paint.

Need to use a wax/grease remover on the areas to paint, is it raw aluminum? Could you post a pic of the wheels? Stay away from spray can. Id go with a bc cc.

Ok. Its not my prefered choice but hey if you gotta use it you gotta use it. If its raw aluminum i agree with above. spraying them with etch primer is your best chance of adhering to the aluminum. Clean the area to be painted using a non lint cloth with denatured alcohol or a wax and grease remover. Spray light coats of etch primer Covering the area to be painted completely. Then scuff lightly with a scotch brite pad, clean again with wax and grease remover or wash using dawn dish soap, allow to dry completely before taping to paint. Ive seen wheel paint at the pairts store. Never used it though

Local auto parts store can mix auto paint in rattle can. Last I got was $38. per can . Supposed to be high quality automotive paint.

Rattle can is rattle can. If you can find the color you want in say krylon or rustoleum enamel, your are getting the same product.
The appeal for them mixing it up is to match a color that the rattle can industry does not provide.
If you just want say... argent or black, buy the rattle can in Kyrlon or whoever.

1K paint is junk no matter what you pay for it. Here is some good info http://www.eastwood.com/1k-coating-vs-2k-coatings

X 2! if you will be playing with these old cars for years, IF NOTHING else , get a 20 gal used compressor and a $50 HVLP gun and buy real primer and paint, the PPG or DuPont or who evers second line of primers and paints. find a real auto paint store. you will light years ahead.

x2 spend the few extra bucks and get good quality paint. if you want to save a few bucks don't buy ppg or DuPont. buy their 2nd tier paint its called Omni for ppg and nason for DuPont.

Depending on the look or texture you want to achieve you can have them sandblasted with a fine grade of sand which will remove any old paint and at the same time smooth out any ruff texture. However Sandblasting will change the natural color of the aluminum but if your painting them that won't matter. And yes you will need to use a quility etch primer where ever you want to spray color. If you have any other questions PM me i have 10 years in industrial sandblasting and painting
