I work in Long Beach, CA. About 25 miles south of LA. Been working there for close to 10 years, but dont live there. Lately, I have witnessed some pretty strange things that have eluded me for 9: Some middle aged lady popping a squat right on the side of her car in front of a restaurant, with the ensuing puddle trickling down to the street. Then the next day, I see a middle aged guy hosing down the plants in the middle of the street off a metrorail platform. Full view of passing cars as you cant hide that no matter what direction you let it fly. I yelled out the van "WTF?" and the guy just looked at me like I was crazy. Today, I see the normal crazy sidewalk dwellers, but this one is yelling and beating her head against the sidewalk, so loud that I could hear it 2 lanes away, then the next light there is a lady in the #2 lane stopping traffic with her hand up, cussing out the car she was facing and every car that passed her. She then walks onto the metrorail track and causes the entire 5 car train to stop short of the platform. No one is doing **** around here to protect the citizens from this filth. C'mon, this aint San Francisco! I may write an open letter to the editor of the paper just to let the citizens know what an outsider sees when he works here. Then I get home today, and find out there was a shooting at an MMA gym not 400 yards from my house. This is getting out of hand.....:protest:

Lead in the water..or paint...or leaded gas...

maybe the democratic national convention is in town?

My neighbors EX walked down my driveway. She dropped her pants and pissed right in the middle of my driveway.

In front of all of the guys that were standing down at the garage. What she didn't see was my wife sitting at the table by the pond right next to her.

I thought my wife was going to have a heart attack. She totally flipped out. On this lady. And this lady saw nothing wrong with what she did. She said there should be no shame releaving yourself. When you gotta go you gotta go.
My wife made her hose the driveway down and told her never to come back.

It was like watching a dog she didn't even stop dripping and she was pulling her pants up. I never laughed so hard in my life.

Next time any of you come here mention it to my wife.

They say everything starts in California and takes about ten years to make it to the east coast.

No thanks, I cherish my life!!

Good portion of the homeless population have mental health issues. That include a good number of our veterans. The system is to blame for this problem

we wonder why some of the mass killings take place, oh some want to move their agendas forward and blame guns, when any body with a brain bigger than the knats know so many it traces back to mental illness. not something politicians want to address, not homeless vets with issued, where and what to do with people with mental illness that have the clear possibility to harm themselves or others???

out here in the middle of the nation, many of us trade off the things people on the right and left coasts put up with and covet) ,.... so we can live our boring life!!!LOL

No ones pullin their pants down here... too damn cold

but seems like we have just as many shootings and gun control to boot.

None of these freaks were vets: Too fat, Too fat, and (2) too ugly.

To try and answer the OP, and this is my observation from my point of view where I live in the U.S.A. Here goes: There is no institutionalization of mentally retarded and mentally ill in the US anymore, it has been done away with probably 25-30 years ago. These people were sent fron institution into society in group homes. As the govt. runs out of money to "take care" of these people, they become homeless. The people you see pissing in the street are most likely homeless and living like animals. They woul probably be glad to get arrested for public urination and sent to jail- three hots and a cot, but the local govt. don't want to feed them and neither does the State and Federal govt. Local police are interested in arresting people who can afford the fines imposed, that translates to making criminals out of the "working class" basically. Crimes like DUI, drug abuse, bad checks, speeding, street racing ,domestic assault ,or any kind of assault are what police are looking for, the list goes on. There is no revenue dragging mentally ill and homeless off to jail.

Exactly.

Our government decided that blowing money on the interests of the 1% is better than re-investing OUR HARD EARNED TAX DOLLARS in us. Namely the 99% left, that has to deal with the fallout from our so called "leaders" continual squandering of our nations wealth, and the incompetence that comes from people who have never worked an honest day in their lives (GOVERNMENT). It's way out of control and will only get worse.

Makes me sad to be an American who pays, yet has no say anymore.

You don't need to be mentally ill to feel the pressures of the economy and snap under the stress...

If you can't get a job to keep up payments on your bills and house, then it gets taken away, I would go "postal" also...

When you hit rock bottom and have lost everything, you have nothing more to loose and EVERYTHING TO GAIN....

I wonder if it is just a case of people doing what they please and to hell with the rest of us.

That was true before the internet.

Twenty years ago one probably had to go to the theater to see academy award winning movies.

Maybe drugs.
With violence, smut and **** at our fingertips and on demand from Hollywood.
In third world countries they squat in the fields.
Now the third world is here.

There is no revenue dragging mentally ill and homeless off to jail.

And it doesn't solve the problem. Jail is no place for those people. Really solving the problem would take a different approach involving mental health treatment, drug treatment, appropriate housing and useful work tailored to their abilities, and I don't know what else. (And yes, some of them probably need to be locked up in a humane environment.) All of that costs money, and that money won't be available unless it becomes a big enough problem that the citizens raise their voices for a solution. Perhaps even more important, all of that is not of interest to most cops. There needs to be a different kind of police force to deal with mental health cases, staffed by people who are trained and interested in doing that.

So how does it happen? If it becomes a big enough problem in one area, the local politicians will decide to spend the money on a program that really works. If it's successful, maybe it will spread to other areas. That's the beauty of decentralized government. There are always problems, but they will get solved in the long run. Then new problems pop up...rinse and repeat.

So yes, write to the paper. That's how the system is supposed to work.
