I have a friend who has a 2.76 geared Sure Grip pumpkin (unknown if 489, 741 or 742 case). He threw out a price of $500 :wack: and I told him probably it's worth around $200 which still might be overpriced. Anyone have an idea of what it's realistically worth?
 
depending on the case, and if it is a cone or clutch style, I don't see him having any problems selling it for that money
and I dont see you finding one for less then half what he is asking


just checked our for sale section
prices range from 275, to 500
so maybe he is 100 dollars high
 
If it's a clutch type and in good shape, I think he's in the ballpark.
 
2.76 SG? I guess they put them in everything. Cone or clutch, 500 is not unrealistic but it seems high with that gearset.

I meant for his asking price of 500

the clutch style is more wanted then the cone style because of its official rebuildabability, the 489 is worth more then the other two cases

the gear set is not very wanted but I still think what he is asking isn't outrageous


I bet if you were to compare those prices to ebay he would be underselling it
 
I paid 350 for my 742 case cone sure grip with 4.10 gears. Been in my car for a year now. Best 350 ive ever spent!
 
I believe you can buy the SG unit new for $300, which is what you're buying a 2:76 for, so $200 is not a bad offer! Of course , since he's at $500, he probably won't accept!

And, for the record, I've found bunches of 2:76 and 2:94 clutch style SG units in the big C's of the mid 60's, a much overlooked place to score a clutch style SG rear end!!!

How you bees figgerin that, g? The 489 never came with the clutch type unit. Ever. The 742 does not use a crush sleeve and it always had the clutch type unit if it was a factory sure grip unit.

It's splittin hairs, but I would say the 742 wins out over worth.

Very true, my 68 fury had a factory clutch sure grip 742 with 2.76s. I promptly replaced that with a spare 2.94 open and the centersection is now in my dart.

I thought the 489 has the larger pinion, and therefor is said to be the strongest of the three?

It's a tapered pinion, but yes, it is the largest at its largest diameter. However, it uses a crush sleeve which in high HP applications negates a little strength.

That's why all in all the 742 has a little edge. It ain't much, but IMO it does.

Also, devaluing what he has based on gear ratio is stupid. A gear set can be had for 150 bucks. Gear ratio has no bearing on what the third member is worth.

Where can you buy a new SG for 300.00?
 
I just looked, cheapest I found is 415.00 -450.00. Unless I wasn't looking in the right place?
 
Yeah I think that's them. The real Dana units are like 600 from Summit I think.

...or does Dana even make them anymore?

I just found out that the pumpkin in question - a 2.76 Sure Grip - is a 742 case. So maybe his price is not far out of line? He did say he's willing to negotiate on the price. So, Rusty and others in the know, what's a fair price for both of us on this unit?
