Hello Hemi Swappers!

I recently bought a 2014 5.7 VVT MDS 30K truck engine off ebay but have not opened it up yet.

I am still searching for what I want to do as far as computer and wiring harness. I do not want to run a carb, I want to stick with fuel injection. I have the factory harness and computer but I don't think I have the VIN.

I think when I flip the engine on the stand to replace the pan and windage tray I will look at the cylinder walls and check for wear or damage. I have access to one of the camera probes like harbor freight sells, you can also get them for some smart phones now. Figure I will remove spark plugs and look down from above to see the condition of the top of the pistons. Just don't want to tear it down at this point unless I need to. I want to make it run and take it from there.

I have been gathering parts for a few months now and would like to put down what I have and get your feedback on do's and don'ts of my project.

The car is a 71 Swinger, slant six, three on the tree stick. Yes, it has the anemic 7 1/4 rear and all drum brakes. I have an 8 3/4 that I need to assemble. Dr. Diff axles. Rear disc assembly. 3:23 sure grip (unless dear old dad threw it away.) Dr. Diff front disc brakes to add to the car as well. Sway bars etc.

I have a 727 core that I will either try and rebuild or use to mock up in the car until I find something already working.

I still need motor mounts and a lot of other things I probably have not even thought of yet.

What I have so far...

73-76 V8 K member (Spool mount)

I assume your torqueflite is for a small block.
Flexplate: ATI 915685 is designed so that you can bolt your torquflite up to the 5.7 without needing a spacer.
You prob. already know about the Mopar mini starter and TTI headers.

"-Variable Valve timing for up to 4 VVT camshafts"
Read the whole page. Now if people have called and been told otherwise fine.

I called EFIsource. The system is VVT ready but shipped with it turned off. It needs to be programmed to each car individually. That part of the system is not self learning. One tune will not work for various combos. If you have a good dyno shop with a good tuner they most likely can handle it.
Even if you use the factory ECM set up by Hotwireauto.com or diversifiedcreations.com it still needs to be tuned for your car to work properly. No different than tuning a distributor in theory. Only with computer code vs weights, springs and vac advance.
He did admit they are behind by 4-6 weeks in supply. I haven't dealt with them so I can't say how reliable that estimate is.

Thank you Rockin Robin.

Got a new mini starter sitting in a box and a new flex plate. Kind of torn on the the TTI headers. I bought a pair of 6.1 Jeep exhaust manifolds for $100. Going to give them a try. If they don't fit I will put them on ebay and go with the TTI's.

I wish someplace like BBK would make an inexpensive shorty header for A bodies. They make them for other Hemi applications.

Blueduster and Cu440da,

Thanks for the advice guys.

I had a couple back and forth emails with Mike @ efi source and I will probably go with them. Seems less expensive and more versatile at this point in time. As for the VVT being shut off...good to know but as long as the engine runs good I can live with or without VVT at this time. Good to know about the 4-6 week back order. I have taxes to take care of this month anyway so it will probably be a couple months before I scrape together money for that. I have had two false starts on engines for this project so far, I really just want to make it run.

I guess I need to buy some MDS block off plugs.

Still need Motor Mounts. I hear good and bad stories about TTI mounts and I know others have fabbed their own or used Speedway or other hot rod mounts. But my welding skills are almost non existent so fabbing my own at this point is almost a non starter. I do have that 90 degree oil adapter that I hope will clear the motor mount a little better.

I see people selling intake manifold bolts. Are the factory ones a one time use thing? Or is this just an opportunity to play dress up and put something shiny on your engine? :)

Just want to make sure I have what I need before I take something apart.

I need to do some car juggling to work on the dart. My rusty challenger sits where I need to work on the dart. Dad and mom lost the paperwork on the challenger so you can't park it on the street or the tow yard gets a present courtesy of the city police.

The Dart and the Challenger are at my girlfriends place and I guess I should take the challenger to my place across the river. Just hate paying to tow stuff but no plates so I can't do this one myself.

Thanks for all the help guys!

I have been trying to find an inexpensive Factory Service manual for a 2014 Ram 1500. Look like you can't get the $9.00 DVD's for models this new. This is the cheapest I have found. http://servicerepairmanuals.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=1220
$89.oo!

Anyone have a cheaper source?

I have been reading some older posts on the Ram forums and looks like most of the newer ram engines you have to pay a chunk of money to get the FSM or even rent the access to them online.

So I think EFI source sounds better and better at this time. I don't think I would really have the time or patience to do my own wiring harness at this time in my life.

The 2005 ram hemi with manual transmission starter tucks the tightest against the block giving you a lot of room for exhaust. There are only a couple nubs on the block that need to be trimmed to get it to fit

Thanks Topls!

I had never heard that before. Book marking them on ebay and Rockauto right now. I will check my local part stores as well.

That's a good motor you have. I have a 2013 Ram quad cab, and for a truck that sucker moves!! Pretty powerful engine. I have an S&B intake, and a ported 87 mm throttle body.
That thing would rip in a 3000 pound A-body!

Thanks Mopardude~!

I think you're right. I think it will be enough to keep me happy for a while. I have been stuck driving an anemic honda civic the past couple years. I have more fun driving my 360 2bbl 72 B100 van than driving the honda.

Oh, I bought some TTI motor mounts last night. 10% off at Mancini with their tax deal. One small step closer.

Just picked up the Wiring harness and for the 2014+ 5.7 Hemi. Not new but not used. Seller did not use it and decided to sell. Hopefully I can start on this project again. The last three years I have been dealing with my health as well as my father’s health and passing away and have not been able to get much of anything done.

Suddenly feels like I got a new lease on hot ridding.

Good luck with your project!! I have done a couple of A-bodies. Tight fit, but it can be done. Reading through your parts list. You mentioned the 45 degree oil filter adapter. Will NOT work. You will have to do oil filter relocation. You might already know this by now, but, just trying to save you a headache. The engine mounts(TTI spool type) occupy the same place as the filter.

Thank you 40 Swinger.

Since I wrote that parts list I acquired a few other parts that I have not checked to see if they will work or not. I bought a QA1 K member, all I know is it has the biscuit mounts. So I will need to buy another set of motor mounts. No idea if the 45 degree adapter will work or not. I did buy a 90 degree adapter but again I have no idea if it will work or not.

I think I should write an updated parts list.

Thank you for the information and please feel free to share any other tips you may have.

Check out Schumaker for mounts

FYI: If a Slant 6 K-frame and Schumaker mounts are used, it frees up a LOT of room around the oil filter.

Any fab work done to make that work? If not, that's the bomb!
I don't think anything is needed but a small filter but I'm not sure exactly. The pic is from a customer of his car. I sent him a msg to see what it look like in the car.

I'm trying to find a Slant 6 K. But of course you trip over them when you don't want one but they all disappear as soon as you do.

Thank you MyDust,I was going to use a slant K at one point, now I have a QA1 k member. I have no idea if I will be able to use my 45 or 90 degree adapter or now.
As 408 Swinger said, neither the 45 or 90 degree adapter will work with a QA1 in an A-body. It has to be a remote oil filter setup. The V8 mount on the right side gets in the way.

The Slant 6 offers more room for sure but the 45 degree adapter still doesnt fit without modifying the stock slant 6 K frame.

But a 90 degree adaptor or small tea cup filter will most certainly have better luck but i haven't personally tested that.

Here's some pics of a 45 degee + Slant 6 K frame + Schumacher mounts
