Can someone tell me what these are?

The real answer, Take the bumper to your chromer, they will weld the holes closed and straighten it for the price they give you, It is part of the service at my chromer. If they wont, find a new place to do your chrome. IMO. And RRR can be a little corrosive, but he has a wealth of knowledge to impart. Cut him a little slack, or not!

Or if you have sellers remorse, clean it the best you can, get nice pics and ebay it. You may even come out a few bucks ahead. I dont see any used ones at all, just new. Either way its not as bad as you think.

Hey RustyRatRod, you can go ahead and not post comment on my threads in the future. You are normally rude and extremely unhelpful, and I do not ask questions on FABO to be mocked. If you do not want to show respect, then you can go elsewhere.

I see he's making more friends.

RRR is a good guy, he's got a dry sense of humor (like me) but he usually means no harm!! Sarcastic at times and also very helpful/knowledgeable. I wondered about some of his posts in my thread when I first came to this web site and it took me a while to understand that the great majority of the time he trying to help or get more info in order to help. You just have to understand where he's coming from.
FYI, He tends to joke a lot (yank your chain) even though it may not seem that way by the words he chooses!!!!!!! I'd invite him back into the thread.

YOU GOTTA HAVE SOME FUN HERE!!!!

Try to cancel order with seller, when you explain it to him he should let you out of buying it. If not consider buying bumperettes for it.

Not to muddy the OP's thread with all this stuff, but RRR is all of the above, and he didn't get that way with some of it by himself.
A person get's tired of saying the same things over and over after a questions is asked, and when people don't listen to good advice it gets very frustrating.
Sure he might make a mistake here and there (like any of the rest of us) but he tries just like the rest of us.

I'll tell ya the secret about taking the joking and ribbing and sometimes flat out embarrassing things he says sometimes.
You have to be secure in your own existence, because if you are not you can get derailed by him pretty quickly.

One big reason I know this is because my younger Brother is the same way exactly.
Most people can't stand being around him because he says whatever he wants.
No political correctness, no pampering someone's feelings, and no sugar coating but he is a great guy and would give you the shirt off his back (after you got a pretty hilarious ribbing)

RRR has gotten me good a few times where I could have gotten all defensive and butt hurt about it, but I didn't because he doesn't threaten my manhood or my self worth. (ego)
Not having that threat allowed me to see how he got me and just how frickin funny it was.

I just turn around and give it back to him, and laugh about it both ways.

I totally agree about having some fun here and there, but there's always someone involved in the snowball fight that ends up pissed and crying.

No offense meant to anyone, just the way it is.

here's a little "Bumper Jack 101":

the first pic shows a flat support jack. that style of jack was used from the 30's through the early 1950's with older cars with "flat" bumpers and bumpers attached with exposed bumper support braces.

the second style bumper came around in the late 1950's and was seen as safer than the first style because the "lip" on the end of the support would catch under the bumper holding the jack in place. this style was used from the late 50's through the early 1970's. some cars with this jack also have small square "cut-outs" on the bottom edge of the bumper allowing the lip to fit into the cut out.

the third style jack came around in the mid-1970's and was seen as an even improved safety design. this jack fit into a slot cut in the bumper thereby making it impossible for the jack to slip out of the bumper. a lot of foreign cars also use some kind of jack that fits into a slot or rectangular or round hole.

bumper jacks are not as common today because of "run flat" tires.

Call your chromer before you do any welding, usually they just want to fill the holes and do repairs themselves. i truthfully dont know if thats due to a special process, or if customers dont do the repairs clean enough to chrome over, but I have heard it several times. Guess it makes sense it has to be perfect, since you cant just use filler to get it straight as you would with body work.

what Johnny said!

What the others said. Let your chromer take care of it. The chromer here won't even touch **** that hasn't been welded by them. He's said it takes longer to fix it then it does to just weld it themselves.

As for RRR, take what he says with a grain of salt and maybe a shot of tequila. Like some liquor he's an acquired taste. But he will get the job done.

If you decide to paint it, like monochromatic (body color) a good epoxy etch primer will be what you need to use otherwise nothing will stick to it, that and sanding the chrome with a DA sander to rough it up to get the epoxy to stick.

Additionally though welding the slots is preferred, if you dont have access to a welder, grind the slots slightly concave, and sand them on the sides of the slotted holes to clean rust free steel, tape it from the back, and fill the slots solid with JB weld. Then sand it smooth, epoxy prime the bumper, and then further work the filled areas with sandpaper and some fine scratch and pinhole filler like evercoat.

Then scuff the epoxy primer down, and apply your filler primer, sand it smooth and topcoat the bumper with your body color.

Ha! You guys are funny. I just got tired of his crap. Don't much care to hear from him any further. All the rest of you are either extremely helpful or somewhat entertaining. I don't see the point of going on someone else's thread and saying, "How the hell should we know?"

As far as the bumper, I have been looking at a bunch of pics with the bumperettes, and i am sorta starting to like them...

It baffles me how many people don't know about bumper jacks. Didn't they come standard in like every late sixties, seventies mopars and others?

Oh yes. I did go around with Rusty once. But it only took that one time. Sometimes, he can come off rude, but in all honesty he doesn't mean it. Unless you really make him mad, but you have to be trying.

Do you know how many years it has been since any car has come with a bumper jack? I mean at 60 years old, yeah, I understand and have used one more than a couple of times. But since the evolution of rubber bumpers, no one has had to learn how to use one.

My 79 Volare had them too. I don't know how long they mAde bumper jacks though. I would guess into the very early eighties. I think they started using bumper covers about that time.

I dont think there is anything close to being a safe jack, short of a floor jack. I drove a VW bus and it came with a pathetic jack. I guess it was a geared jackscrew that raised a little square rod that fit in a receiver by the offending wheel. We jacked the front up to change the blowout (that was fun too!) and a passing big rig literally blew the bus off the jack, bending it to hell and leaving us stranded for 40 minutes until another VW bus saw pity on us and stopped. We had to time the jacking to a pause in big rig traffic, which was like none on the way from Baker to Stateline, NV. Aah, jack stories.....

Well I'm not saying they are safe. They are downright scary. I've had to use them too. Floor jack all the way.

Heh heh...bumper jacks. Can be used to install chain link fencing too. And one member of the 'local community youth group' called bumper jack......

I noticed that a couple moderators edited out the foul-mouthed aggressive language of Rusty Rat Rod towards me, so now I just look like a jerk, lol...

Well, as the thread goes, I am definitely gonna use bumper guards now cuz they look tuff to me now...

I wish that was my car! I was just illustrating the bumper guards look on a 71 grill... My car will end up looking similar to this one but different color/wheels/ n with no hood scoops...

I just bought a bumper from someone on FABO? I JUST ordered it seconds ago, and then realized that there were slots in it that aren't in my old beat up one... What are they? in the middle parts n off to the sides...

Those slots are for the little bumper overriders. I have them on my 70 Swinger
