I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to get the road grime off the side markers that accumulated for 45 years! I would like to get my side markers working, but they need new bulbs and I can't figure how to "Safely" remove all that crud that is on them.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Probably amateur under coating restoration..........

Seen it many times. Slowly turn fasteners and work it loose.........

assuming it is undercoating - a hair dryer on high (do not use a heat gun!) and a medium blade screw driver to clean/scrape the goo/crude - the heat will also make getting the nuts loose easier - carb cleaner to clean the tools later

Not sure it is undercoating. It seems like dirt that is compressed, big time. I "think" it is road grime from 45 years of driving. I will double check to see if it might be undercoating, but the car was not really worked on much before I got it. It sat for a number of years, but it seems like the must have driven it through a hundred mud puddles or something, lol?

If it is dirt how could I get it off. I can't get to the nuts to turn them, they are buried in this stuff. ugh But the dirt is like rock or something now, very, very, vvvvvvvery hard.

maybe get in there with some hot water and scotch-brite and see if the dirt comes away and what it leaves behind..

Yeah, a wire brush and/or scotch bright would work with water. Never thought of that.

Thanks. I will try it in the morning.

You could do like the mining industry, take a core sample.

Find a heavy area, and drill into it with a 1/8" bit at slow speed. See what comes out.

Probably decades old hardened road tar.
