Is the replacement manual aluminum steering box that is available (cheaper than flaming river) any good. Or should a guy steer clear of it and stick with the cast. Not really going for weight reduction. More after eliminating the power steering, quality, and safety. Aluminum $240 and River's is $500. Thanks

I would find a used original and rebuild it before buying a $240 or $500 replacement...

I understand and probably the best idea. However, would I not be left with the old tech 24:1 ratio instead of 19:1 or 16:1?

I think the stock manual box is aluminum.

Now you really got me. If this is the case I wonder why put the new stuff in cast iron. And why is autoplicity part# FR1540 @ 19:1 and $610 and Speedway is the exact same part number but is 16:1 @ $500.

Yes, the factory manual boxes are aluminum. Power steering is iron presumably to hold the pressure. The ratio is set by the internal gear set. The housings are all the same. So you could have yours rebuilt as a 16:1 by buying the gear set. Firm Feel does this. Although last year they were out of 16:1 gears for a while.

Thanks this helps a lot. I'm ditching the power set up for the manual. Now I know what to look for.
