Being old enough to remember the distinctive sound of the 340's from the late 60's - early 70's, I'm wondering if anyone has mufflers that still have that sound? Just starting the resto on my 73 340 Dart Sport and one of my goals is to get the original sound.

Get ahold of Accurate exhaust products, they should have what you need.

I put the Summit 2.5 kit on my 73. It came with Hearthrob turbo mufflers in a white box. I added an H pipe and it toned it down a little.

ebay "dodge dart exhaust" and look for Classic Car exhaust
i have used their stock mufflers and they are quiet just like back in the day
..they get a bit louder when you step on it and you'll still hear the air cleaner waaahhh!
just like 1969!
they have a performance muffler as well but i have not heard it.

Dynomax super turbos have a factory sound too. My brother has them on his 440 Dart. Wish I knew how to post a sound byte.

And don't forget those factory exhaust tips. They really contribute to that sound. And headers will really change the sound, away from factory. The pulses seem to be just too even. And forget about big pipes. And do you also remember the sound of the factory heat riser valve? You just gotta have that! I remember it fondly.

Does anyone know how get the thermoquad roar when switching to efi?

Stock 340's had both mufflers and resonators on them... (To make them sound like a school bus....)

i have used Accurate's standard 340 mufflers. They do not sound
stock but they sounded o.k.
i have never seen an A body with resonators?

I always thought the chrome tips contributed to the exhaust sound some how some way. My 69 'cuda 340 came with factory 2-1/4" pipes but then it gets funneled down through the tips. I have not measured the ID of those but I think the reduction in size makes the gases speed up so that the exhaust flow is accelerated just before the bumper. At idle, it always seems that the exhaust blasts out of there as if propelled by a high compression high performance engine. Oh wait,...it is. (relatively speaking) Those sneaky Chrysler guys probably did that on purpose. Why else would you make pretty nice factory systems and choke it down right at the bumper?

First thing I used to do was get rid of the stock mufflers and manifolds, add headers and thrush mufflers. That is the sound I remember best.

For what its worth, here are the mufflers I'm going to try on my 73 Duster as soon as the weather cooperates , 22590 Walker quiet flow turbo style. 16 x 9 , 2.5 offset inlet , 2.25 center outlet and they are fairly reasonable priced under $50 ea. And Accurate tail pipes

i can remember a friend winding his Dart up on main street on a quiet summer night with burned out glass packs....rattling the big store front windows!

By the way the correct tips have a lot to do with the sound. They are an expansion chamber. We used to call them "Boom Tubes" LOL

Man I loved the Sonic turbos! Wish they were still available.

Yeah, I thought about changing them but they perform nicely (not much difference between open headers and plugged exhaust) and I still like the sound. I don't know exactly when they stopped making them.
