Hi,

I've read on many places that 1406 is exacly the same carb as 1405 ecxept electric choke.
Well it's not.
I have both of them and here is the difference that I found (maybe the moldning of the main carb house is the same, that I don't know)

The 1st cluster on 1406:
Red ring: This hole is slightly bigger on my 1406 than my 1405

Turn it around and you find this:

Interesting stuff! I haven't seen any comparisons online like this; it gives credence to the idea that you can't simply pop 1405 jets and rods into a 1406 and make it the same. Thanks!

Manual choke is supposed to be jetted richer from the factory than the electric choke model

I know the 1400 is different because its driver's side vacuum port isn't manifold vacuum. I think all of their models are different internally in some fashion or another.

Looks to be the same secondary booster discussed here:

Speedtalk Edelbrock 1407 thread

It would be advisable to try and get a hold of the earlier pre Federal Mogul Carter 600-625 carbs for comparison.

Hysteric

I wonder about the hybrids that Edelbrock first made that still had the Carter number, but had the Edelbrock name plate. I have one runnin happily on my truck but I ain't tearin it apart. lol

This is very interesting indeed. I see so many people saying how wonderful the car runs by simply changing the jets and rods on the 1406 to a stock 1405 set up.

Are they just getting lucky? I think it seems smarter to try step #23 on the 1406 manual to richen things up a little then to stick a 1428 jet in a 1406 and have the set up found nowhere on the chart in the manual, let alone in the proper shaded area.

Does deleting an existing EGR change how you should tune at all? Has anyone deleted EGR and used a 1406 carb instead of the 1400? Would love to know how they tuned it and what worked best for them.

Some yes, some no.
Luck: There seems to be a bit of luck of the draw with which internal variations may come on any particular carb.
Not Luck: If you have a very similar vehicle, ie engine, ignition, gearing, weight etc, then copying a good recipe will provide similar results. Saves a lot of time and effort and generally gets you pretty darn close.

Depends on each persons ability to tune. If the chart is not getting the expected results, investigation or a different approach is needed. If the chart is working as expected, then use it.

If you have a vehicle working correctly with EGR and then simply disconnect it, the fueling and timing will likely be incorrect for the situations where exhaust gas is fed back into the cylinders. Off the top of my head, part throttle acceleration and steady cruising will be off and likely need some tuning. Cold engine and wide open throttle will be uneffected.
