Putting my 70 duster witing back together. PO has it all cobbled up. Alot of missing connecters and im not sure where some connecters and wires go. The far right bulk connecter in the pic is literally not hooked to anything. Has cut wires everywhere.

I also need to know how the starting and charging system goes back together

Sorry to sound dumb but this is my first real hotrod build and i absolutly suck at electrical

The best place to start is to get a factory service manual.
They have the schematics which you can use to rewire your
entire car if you need.

are you doing a correct restore? if not, do yourself a HUGE favor - buy an aftermarket harness..

I am not sure that works for everbody, many have problems with aftermarket, because many are not mopar or year specific. Things like, wiper controls, headlight switches, and ignition supply diffences raise problems.

true enough - but, if it is going to be a hot rod, then there's no need for Mopar or year specific, now is there? I've done an A-body (Scamp) and found the aftermarket harness had way more options and connections than I needed - modern fuses, clearly labeled wires, nothing to hate - I kept all the original connectors and adapted the harness to them.. piece of cake.. and I despise doing wiring. Definitely NOT for OEM guys though..

This may help or get a manual.

OK it worked for you, that is great, but you have not shared the one you like, that would be of help.

I am upgrading my wiring right now also, read the MadElectrical.com amp meter wire around. Read all of the info he has on his site, very informative. You will really need a wiring diagram to figure what goes were. My harness was in reasonable shape to start with so I am just going to do the amp gauge bypass and alternator remote voltage sensing up grade this year. My factory gauges never worked so I have all after market gauges so I had already run new wires to all the sensors. After looking at my harness and wiring diagram I have eleminated the old gauge wires out of bulkhead conector and drilled them out and will run new gauge wires strait though bulkhead. Next winters project is to install a new EZ wire harness. If your harness is hacked up you would be far better of with new harness.
It looks to me like the connector missing on your bulkhead is the one going to your wiper motor and the reverse lights.

Yes i found a diagram and it looks like that third bulkhead is wipers and some air co stuff. There was one wire i was concerned about in that connecter but i forgot what it was. Have to look again. I noticed last night that the nss on the trans has a plug in it but no prongs for any kind of a hook up. Is there another way for this to work?

anyone playing with these old cars needs a FSM, in print or loaded into the puter. just a fact.

then most of us will still need help, BUT.......... its a start!

The schematics in the manual are fairly pictoral, and much easier to read than the computer-generated manuals for new cars today. If that is too intimidating, you can find simpler schematics in color, sometimes broken down to isolated circuits (like "charging"). Many have been posted here. For basic electricity questions, there are many tutorials on youtube and wiki's.

Ive got some of it figured out. The far right is mostly wipers and air co. There is a wire in it for nss but im not understanding my setup. My nss on the trans has no spot for a connection. Like its a dummy plug. The car ran last year with whatever wires are in it. Im just having trouble figuring out where to connect them lol

that's odd... left side of trans, above the pan area - 3 prongs... nothing? any chance the weather protector "boot" is there and the wires have been cut off...?

see - you're upgrading and updating... man, it is doable for sure (and it's probably easy-ish) but to me, that aftermarket harness sure is sounding good... just sayin'... :D
Also im switching to a msd 6al. Could someone help me get rid of the balast and ignition module

I will get a pick and better look tonight. There was 3 dots but no prongs or female ends. Really looked like a dummy plug.
Also i like the aftermarket idea i just dont like the price right now lol

I hear ya - it's tough either way really.. we're all just trying to help you out - now that I have a better idea where you're at, I will shut up about the aftermarket stuff :glasses7: - look forward to seeing this plug.. very odd sounding.

I'm surprised this forum doesn't have a wiring diagram database or thread?

I photo copied wiring schematic from a Mitchell manual years ago when I was in auto tech school. Ill have to see if I still have it. It is for a 1970 Dart. Maybe we can get a wiring database started here on the forum? (if it isn't already a started thread)

I think the wiring database is. Much needed. Soecially since i cant get any of the mymopar links to work that i keep seeing

Here is a quick shot i got of the nss plug. No prongs and those arent female holes. Just flats

Compare your NSS socket w/ photos on rockauto. As I recall, it should have protruding male pins. Looks like they pulled out. Do you find them on the other side, stuck in the plug?

Like everyone is recommending here, you're going to need to grab the factory wiring diagram to start diagnosing any issues right now. MyMopar.com is a great resource for this.

The thing about this is now you're gonna go down the rabbit hole and 30-40+ years of molested wiring will do nothing but have you running in circles (trust me, I would know).

Since you said this is a rebuild save yourself a ton of headache and go with an aftermarket kit. I was having so many issues with the electrical system that I bit the bullet and went aftermarket. I'm no wiring genius, and the thought of ripping out all the wire and redoing it was a bit daunting, but don't be afraid to do it - best upgrade to date and is a breeze if you take your time and do good work. You also learn a lot about the car as you go through the process. I really enjoyed the time it took me and will carry this knowledge for life.

If you have the ability to go aftermarket kit I highly recommend Ron Francis. I went with their Express kit for my 1974 Duster. They are thorough with the initial questions they ask so they send you all the right components. They package the kit in sections, the instructions are straight forward, the quality of the kit is very high and their customer support rocks. I looked at some other manufacturers but wasn't too impressed with what I saw and I'm over the moon about my choice.

If you go this route feel free to PM me with any questions, there were a few catches to the install. If not and you decide to rework the stock electrical - good luck!
