Good chance it is nothing serious, especially if you didn't drive far after oil loss began. It may still have had 1 qt left in the pan. My guess is the pop was from a rubber gasket on the high-pressure oil side blowing out. I think the sender has a gasket between the metal and plastic parts, since I have seen them leak. As mentioned, it isn't uncommon for the gasket on the bottom of the oil filter to come off and stay stuck to the oil pump, then someone screws the new filter onto it. That could blow out sideways. Those are more likely to spray oil onto the firewall, like it appears. I think there is also an oil galley plug on the aft side of the engine, but never heard of those releasing.

Worst-case, the OP needs a new engine, but don't jump to that conclusion. You can get slant engines for anywhere from free to $200. Somebody might even pay you to haul a good one away. Everybody wants a V-8.
