I'm in the infancy of my '68 vert resto. I would like to pull the info from my fender tag but it's a bit rough. What is the best way to go about getting it legible? Think I could do a rubbing in the meantime?

Lay a piece of paper over the tag and use a pencil with the lead sharpened and laying on its side to gently rub over the letters! Sometimes this works better from the back!

It doesn't look rusted just dirty around the numbers. I might be tempted to remove it, soak it in some hot water and work on it with an old toothbrush.

Thanks man!

when i restored my 68 fastback, i took the fender tag off and soaked it in auto paint remover. once i got it completely clean and down to bare metal, i sprayed it with a light coat of gun metal grey paint and then outlined the embossed letters and numbers with a black magic marker. it's very easy to read now... although that is NOT a "stock" or "OEM" procedure.
