I wouldn't say that you messed anything up. Anytime you try to start driving a car that has been sitting for a long period of time there are going to be a lot of minor little things wrong with it like leaks and electrical problems and such. Cars have a tendency to deteriorate when they are not being driven on a regular basis...especially when they are 50 years old. It just takes a while to figure it all out. At least you are trying to learn which is a heck of a lot more than most people do. Don't give up on it. I've been working on cars for several decades and they still aggravate the living heck out of me sometimes. You just have to be patient and keep learning.
