Hi all i have a question and idea for removal of paint on my 66 cuda. In the past at some time someone has painted the under hood with rattle can black. I wan to get it back to the Red its supposed to be and its still there under the black. I can access harsh things but i know from being in the industry that brake fluid will remove paint and even on this car while bleeding the brakes around the master a little splattered left for a hour or so and i cleaned it all taking the black back to the paint i want. I was thinking i may put some brake fluid in to a spray bottle spray sections at a time and wash / clean trying to get back to the original. any thoughts?

IMO

It would be easier to just sand it and repaint it.

If it's flaking off then go have someone with a soda blaster strip it back a bit.

It can also remove the factory paint.

If it was cheap rattle can paint, and this will take some elbow grease, you might try buying some polishing compound and see if it will cut it on a small area. I know years ago I used carb cleaner to take a radiator down to the brass but I don't know how it would effect the underlying paint where your concerned.

If it was not cleaned good before the black was sprayed on the green stuff or purple power cleaning chemicals may take it off.

rattle can paint usually has no protective coating (clear coat) and will wipe off "easily" using carb cleaner, paint thinner, prepsol.. it will soften faster than the good paint under it - - these products will "melt" through the original paint if you let it sit there too long or rub too hard, so work quickly and allow it to dissipate before you re-apply.. wash with cold water afterward to remove residue. I use those blue shop towels for all of this.

From the title I thought this was going to be about putting stripes on rattle can paint.

Here's a good design....

^^ this will work better than brake fluid.
