What is a good torque convertor to run in a 440/727 combo. Right now I am running a Hughes 2800-3000 stall. I believe it is a 24-30. I don't believe this one is balanced right.

I can tell you what I just did. Called Frank Lupo at Dynamic convertors, told him what my combo was and he is building me a 4200 flash stall 9 1/2" Billet cover convertor. One that will have good street manors. I've trusted and used him many times in the past, can't go wrong.

You don't say where you got the converter from. Did you purchase it new, or did you purchase it used? It may be out of balance, as when you order this converter, you have to mention what engine you've got so it can be balanced accordingly. Hughes lists this for all 727 transmissions, and I would think if you ordered it from them, they would ask you about your engine so the converter could be properly balanced.
If it's a used unit, you can check my previous posts on used converters. They make great door stops.

I would say go custom. Off the shelf just doesn't cut it. Especially when you can buy a converter built specifically to your cars engine, power, transmission, rear gear, tire size, weight, etc, etc, etc. It will always run the best. PTC, Dynamic, Custom, TCS, and others do custom. I'm in the middle of getting one speced right now by these various guys. So far PTC comes in sounding the best and the best price. We shall see!

I bought it new and I believe I got it from Hughes. I will check these guys out. I think it is hat my problem is. I noticed a small quiver the other day sitting in the driveway with it in neutral when I brought the RPM's up about 1800. Thanks for the replies guys.

I had Lenny build me a custom converter for my car. WOW what a difference it made! Lower RPMs at highway speeds, engine will flash to 3400 RPM when ever I step on it, very little slip when taking off from a dead stop with lite throttle. And the car drives so smooth and vibration free due to outstanding balance. Very impressed! I would never run a junk off the shelf converter ever again.

call dynamic,PTC and ultimate and see what they say. go with who you feel most comfortable with.

dynamic did one for my dart years ago and the difference was incredible. when they told me they were building a 3800 stall for my mostly street driven dart i thought they were nuts. but that 9.5" 3800 converter did exactly what they said it would do.. on the street it drove around like a stock converter but at the track the launch felt like i was being shot out of a cannon..lol.

it was funny.. after i put it in i let my buddy who builds my transmissions take it for a drive.. he came back and screamed "what the hell did you do to that thing". he didn't believe all i did was change the converter. needless to say a few months later he was ordering up a converter for his track car..

another friend got all pissed when wer were side by side turning the same rpm. he had 3.23 gearsand i had 3.91 gear at th etime.. real close to the same size tire too. only difference was he was running that MP 175k junk and i had the 9.5" dunamic in my car.. he also bought a dynamic a few months later. lowered his cruise rpm about 400 rpm and really woke up the car..

thanks for the info. I am going to call these guys and see what is going on. I never had any idea that a custom one was better than one off the shelf. I believe I either bought this one from Hughes or directly from Summit. I will have to go through the papers and see. I have been tied up with my wifes shoulder surgery for the past 2 weeks and have not had time to do much. I have to see who will put this in for me also. I don't believe I am up to it yet from my open heart surgery. But will do if I have to. Thanks for the info. I have learned something.

whatever you do, when you call be 100% honest about your combo and just as important the intended use of your car.. if not you will now be happy with the results.

will will want as much infor on the engine combo, trans and gear along with weight of the car and how its set up and how you plan on using the car.. a mostly street car will get a tighter converter then a full out track car.. things like that

Thanks, I am happy with the one that is in it except for the vibration. It must have not been balanced right or a weight came off. I will fill this form out and call them. Thanks again.

Bill, like Joe said be 100% honest with the specs of the car AND how you intend and or want to drive it.

if you are happy with that converter then just get it rebalanced any one of these great company's mentioned here will do that for you .

I will do that Bruce. Jimjim, I am afraid that the reason it may be unbalanced could be something inside and adding a weight may not fix the problem. I am going to call around tomorrow and check prices. The tranny shop told me today they would put one in if I got it for them as I am not ready to tackle that job again, not yet.

I am going to call around tomorrow and check prices.

Depending on who you call, and what you get, probably 5-7 hundred.

Again, you will need every spec of your engine, the car's weight, rear gears etc. AND, how you intend to drive it. Just cruising, cruising with the occasional romp etc. Be brutally honest about it, that way you will get one that is custom to you.

Yeah, I just looked through my receipts and I bought this one back on 03/04/2011 from Jegs. It was a shelf 24-30 Hughes TQ. 3000 stall. According to the description of it, it doesn't even say it is balanced so I don't know. I am learning about this stuff, what to get and look for.

I had PTC build me a custom one a while ago
at the time I was looking I called a few places, and PTC asked more questions then all the rest combined

I'm really happy with it
it is tight enough that it will creep at a light at idle but when you stomp on it it, it will flash to 3200 RPM and knock the rear end around

Is that PTC you talk about the one in Alabama.

Yes sir

I think I paid about 500 for a custom converter, shipped to Michigan

PTC is who I am going with as well. They quoted me just under 500. Way cheaper than anyone else so far. And they are notoriously good on the street. Super pumped for it.
