Self driving cars? Whats the point?

With all the talk of "self driving cars" "Hands free driving" being the norm in a number of years I am thinking , What's the point?
Is it just me or does this sound dangerous? I like to drive and enjoy the road on a Sunday, or any day as most of us here do. If traffic and being to nervous behind the wheel is a problem for some people then isn't Public transportation an option? Let someone else drive for you, like a bus driver/taxi whatever. Isn't this technology actually taking the purpose of public transportation away. Drivers who don't want to drive....why buy a car, why be on the road, why be a hazard for the rest of us who do like to drive and enjoy it?
I am uneasy in regards to this technology. I am seeing issues with the Ford cars that park themselves for you. When dirt/ snow cover the sensors an accident can and does happen. People are blaming the car.....but it is the "driver" who is responsible, the driver who is technically behind the wheel and responsible for the direction of the vehicle in the end.
Yes, this is real and an issue for insurance companies and owners of these cars as the fight is on when a misshape occurs.
Thoughts from the masses here on FABO...curious :) Other reasons Yay or Nay?
Just making the kids lazy & they don't have to pay attention & learn how to drive
