How much horsepower is too much for small bolt pattern stuff?

Hey guys, just curious what you thought about small bolt pattern 8 3/4 axles. At what horsepower would you need to upgrade to bbp or aftermarket axles? Especially for a 4-speed car! Thanks in advance for any replies!

I ran many many 11.7 passes on a stock 3.91 setup and axles. One of the lug holes in the flange was buggered up so I put Mosers in it. But I never broke or damaged anything.

I think an honest 500 flywheel HP is a good guesstimate.

I would say "a bunch." There was a thread somewhere else referring to the 4 bolt Ford stuff....earlier Mustangs and so on. I've forgotten how fast some of them claimed on the 4 bolt pattern.

Thank you for the replies gentlemen. I guess I'll stick with my 741 case and my small bolt axles. Should be around 400 hp from my 340. Sounds like my rearend stuff should hold up fine. Thanks again, everyone.

Some of the 10" tire outlaw classes those Fox Mustangs are runnin 9s on 4 holers.

Probably less HP than this.............

I'd say if you plan on slicks plan on upgrading or at least routine lug replacement. Nothing more sickening than watching a freshly painted lower rear quaterpanel roll up due to lug fatigue.

Make sure you torque your wheels every week before you race. Every week!

Street cars at least twice after you have the wheels off. Especially mag wheels

I know i snap all 5 of the lugs off my stock small bolt axles,on the starting line with my 416..have Moser axles w/1/2" studs now!!

I have a buddy who had a street/strip 73 duster with a eddyhead 340, 150 shot of NOS, 3:91 gears and adapters to go SBP to BBP, and I cringed everytime he made a pass, it would run 6:80 1/8th mile which is probally 10:90 in the 1/4, never had a problem.......

You won't likely ever tax the rear axle on street tires and SBP.

I doubt you will be able to find a combination of wheels that fit and tires which stick good enough to damage anything for the 5 on 4 pattern anyway

thanks guys, good info. I'll likely be going with a 7" wide wheel and a drag radial. Sounds like I'll be fine.

I run 15x7 rallyes on the back of my duster with M.T. drag radials..if your making any kind of real power,I would NOT use the stock studs or lug nuts..

I'm running 14X10s with N50s in the back and with the 3.23 gears I can smoke them at will
(I do realize I'm talking about an antiquated tire and not a modern drag radial)
