If this is considered a dumb question I apologize. Rear axles is my weakest point of knowledge. What has to happen to use a large u joint for an 8 3/4"? I have 1 car that came with it done on an 8 3/4 and one that is the factory small u joint. I'd like to be able to switch the center chunks between them from time to time. Any help is appreciated.

not a dumb question. my questions-how is the budget? do U want to change a driveshaft to large 7290 rear U joint or use an adapter U joint? what is the last 3 digits of both pumpkins? 741,742,489? convert the small 1 to large by changing pinion yoke, simple on a 742-it has solid spacers, not as simple on a 489 with a crush sleeve

I have 3 chunks 2 are 489 with the big u joint, the 68 barracuda I just picked up is a stock 741. The only reason I would swap is to put the 391 gear/ Detroit locker in for the occasional track run. So I think an adapter u joint might be the way to go

The combo U joint will need to go into the driveshaft on the one with the small joint. You will still need to swap out the pinion yoke on the one chunk with the small U joint to a large one.

That way both drive shafts have the larger cup, and both chunks have the larger cup.

That is if I am understanding your post correctly.

the combo u joint will need to be swapped back to the all small 7260 when you put the 741 chunk back in

yes, another possibility is change the yoke on the 741 to a 7290 large U joint unit, probably 10 spline

Thanks guys, as I won't be doing this often at all I will probably just swap the u joints back and forth with the chunks. Thanks again!
