Remember when this was what they cost?

That's a rather insulting reply to someone that took it upon himself to be in the military, wether voluntarily enlisted, or got drafted into the service, back in the old days.
I'm sure we didn't go in for what was paid to us, back in the dinosaur days.
Personally, i don't appreciate your thinking.
Thank you. I served my country well.

well, then let me explain my thinking, because obvious it wasn't clear what I meant

first of, I hold all service members in the highest regard and I believe they should be properly compensated for their service
the idea that someone flipping burgers (making 15 dollars an hour) makes more then ANYONE in the armed forces is repugnant

and that is what I was referring to, when I made that remark, tongue in cheek
apparently my intend did not show through, and I apologize for that

Ok, you have owned up to your reply.
That i can accept.
I took your statement to mean, one should have gotten a job at McDonalds, back in the 60's and 70's, instead of being in the military.
For me, i gave up the 1970's to be in the military, and throughout my 20's while in the AF.

I've always said that wages/cost of living, is kind of like water. It pretty much floats to level. Kind of hard to compare the prices of cars back then to what they are now. Just what comes basic on most cars today, would have been pretty high optioned back then.

Take a guess what i was paid, as an E1, Airman Basic, when i joined the Air Force, back in 1973.
$400.00 A MONTH.
That's not a miss type either. A month. Can you believe it?

Got that beat - joined the AF in April 66 and as an E1 made a whopping $96 a month and all I could eat at the chow hall plus a place to sleep every night. If I didn't already have a car (58 Volvo PV544) I could have never afforded one at that rate of pay. Oh yes, Uncle Sam took both Federal and state taxes out of it as well.

Thanks to all our Vet's on board here! And to diymirage, thanks for the explanation.

no problem, I guess I have heard people gripe about how ridiculous it is that a burgerflipper earns more then a soldier so often, in my mind the connection was clear, no disrespect intended

While we are on the subject, I think it is national shame that we have First, Military families on welfare and food stamps, and Second, Homeless War Veterans! Shame Shame on US! BUT we can make sure all the Illegals coming into this country have a free education, food to eat and someplace to live. We seem to care more for the lawbreaking "people" then we do for our Military and there families! FYI I served 12 years in the USN. O I almost forgot to include FREE Health care for there broods! The "peoples" Broods!

Tim,
Your points are well put and dead on. We all need to remember what you stated this coming November!
Dan

This country has give so much to a people that are the most disgusting, unappreciative, vile beings on the planet. While the ones that have put their lives on the line the "Jane Fonda's" the "clintons" the obama's and the list goes on, have become rich.Rome revisited

Our government is proposing to give illegal who register $15,000 per year to help them with the hardships they face.
Talk to someone who has worked all of their lives and have earned the right to retire. See how many of them are drawing $15,000 social security. I have worked all of my life and retired in February. I am not drawing that much. If I had worked till I was 66, I would. Fortunately I had planned better than most and social security isn't what I live off of, although it helps, and I am thankful to receive what I do.
My advice to you young guys is to start planning now. If your company offers matching retirement plans take advantage of it. Put all you can in a retirement program. Invest in a safe program and watch your money grow.

I just so happened to go by the Social Security office yesterday, just to check my status. What they told me I can draw is not much more than that, after paying in for almost 50 years. I told my Dad several years ago, if private industry did to a retirement plan what our leaders have done to Social Security, they would be locked up, and the key thrown away.

People don't think about retirement until it is time to retire. It's to late then to change things. Plan early.

I admit, I didn't think about it early enough. About 10 years ago, I started really working toward making up for it. Lot of sacrifices. No new cars, and haven't built my new house yet. Duster is on hold. I tell young people all the time, a little now is a lot easier than having to do a lot later.

Back on topic, when I walked 3 miles to Junior high (yes junior high) in 1969 it was past the cheap gas station in town selling for.195/gal. That's 5 gal for a dollar. On the other topic my son just got out of the AF, my dad was in the army, his sister retired as a col, my son in law was Navy, my other uncle was AF and my brother in law was a marine, so you can guess how I feel.

I wish all these "younger" people could go back in timer and live a month or so back in the 60's.or even early 70's.......... it was not paradise, but no doubt, many "kids" might think it so! let them be 25 yrs old, with an average job, a wife, maybe a young family started, and lets see what they will buy with those LOW car prices!!!! ( yes before the gas embargo, rising insurance rates, etc...) I bet they might buy a new A body! maybe! NO hemi cars or 6 pacs! ???????

Bought my first new car in '72. My Duster cost me a whopping $2550. I was making $2 hour. You all figure it out.
