Trying to hook up my pro ratchet shifter and I can not see an easy way to get the shift linkage and arm off the dam 904???

If anyone has done this with the trany in place please speak up before i start cutting holes in my floor pan...

Thanks again for your time and advice.

What are you having trouble with?? Any pictures???

Are you trying to get the linkages off of the 904??? What year, and model car? Column shift? Console?

We need to know the starting point so we can guide you to the end...

The linkages themselves have clips that must be removed, then the linkages come right off...

The brackets on the trans have bolts & nuts to loosen, then lift the lever off...

No need to cut the floor to remove the linkages....

Im trying to get the shift arm off a 1971 904 column shift in a dart with a 3" collector, 2.5" pipe and tranny lines in the way...

Im familiar with the clips on the kick down bit just getting to the bolt on the pinch fitting is dam near impossible, not to mention getting the new B&M lever on and adjusting the cable..

Im thinking access hole...

I am NOT pulling the driver side header out for this...

What have you "done" to try and remove them? Loosen / remove the clamp bolts and pull them off

Can you move the lever on the trans to help get the bolt in a position where you can get a wrench on???

Maybe disconnect the exhaust at the flange and lower it a bit to get it out of the way....

You can try to lower the tran by dropping drive shaft and rear trans mount. Usually could drop 3" before dizzy hit fire wall. Creates just enough room to get my hand and tools in there.

We have a 71 Valiant on jack stands with 727 and dual exhaust... It;'s tight, but we got it tog

Remove the dizzy cap first so you don't break it....

Along with all the other ideas, after you loosen the clamping bolt on the arm, it helps to stick a screwdriver in the arm , and spread it. Then it comes off.

Wow, I can't imagine.

I had no problems getting to mine.

A 3 inch long 7/16 box end wrench helps a lot. :D
I gotta laugh because I have almost exactly the same setup.

You aught to try changing the cooler line fittings and swapping in bigger lines with all that in there.
It's lesson in patience and bad aids. LOL

I guess it may depend on what header he has, I run the cheapos that are lower that TTI or Dougs, that may make a difference.

Me too, as I have hedmans with 1 5/8 tubes and 3" collectors but I can't reach over them for that kind of stuff.
It's straight up between the trans pan and collector or not at all pretty much.
If I remember, I can reach over the collector to hold something, but not to manipulate anything.

Yeah, Headmans..

What have I done?

jack stands, lots of swearing and wishing it was a TH400, beer drinking, more swearing, more wishing it was a TH400 and finaly back to beer drinking...

I will try your guys ideas this weekend, I still see it being a beioch to adjust the cable even after I get it apart and back togethe...

From what I could see witch aint much, it looks like the kickdown is on top of the shift arm??

anyone got a pick of where their cable goes through the tunnel? I may end up just opening a big hole for the cable any way as last time I did one of these where the cable turns down is kinda importan and has to be just right...

On a separate note how do I remove the colum shift lever once I get past all the above issues?

Thanks again!

Yep, the kickdown lever is on top so it has to come off first.
Both bolt heads are on the rear of the car side if that helps any.
Sacrificing a 7/16 box end wrench is kinda worth it, and totally worth it if you have more than one.

My shifter is a Hurst pro ratshit and the cable goes through the tunnel where it naturally wants too. (no bends or curves)
Then the cable goes up towards the front of the car gradually going to the drivers side of the engine.
It loops up along the side of the block and then down and back to the trans pan rail.
Make sure you tie it away from headers or pipes so it doesn't get burned.
(Those aluminum chain link fence ties work great because heat doesn't bother them if they are close to something hot)
They are about 4-5 inches long and made of soft aluminum that can pretty much be bent with your fingers.

In this pic it shows the shift lever bolt towards the front of the car.

Why are you wishing it was a TH400 ? I am running a 727 and wish I had a 904.

TH 400 has the shift lever hanging down and super easy to remove the lever and adjust the cable..

To bad you arnt closer to me as this 904 is going in the trash and will be replace with TH400 as soon as my wallet can allow...

I would consider a 727 but they dont have any in the u pull it yards..

how dose one connect a SB 904 to a 440?

after the cost of the adapter plate and trany pluss the upgrades i could buy a mopar trany...but I dont like the thought of one blowing up and tearing my foot off...

And here one sits in my back yard needing the planetary set anyway.
Too bad your not closer I'd make ya take it home. :D

TH 400 's blow up also. The camaro on street outlaws called the REAPER just blew up his a couple of weeks ago and destroyed a lot of stuff and broke the drivers nose.

You wish you had a GM th400 because you cant remove a simple shift lever on a mopar transmission????????

I like the GM trans cuz they are.dirt cheep and im building a race car, not a resto car to brag about and never drive...

Whats your point?
Just say what you think, dont act like a little girl and hide behind some half *** remark...

I will be driving thru South Lake Tahoe this weekend...where do I pick it up at and does the converter come with it also...lol

me and the car are currently in san jose, and im not removing the drive line untill the new motor gets dropped in. other wise i would say yes.

I will put up a for sale add (Free) once im ready to remove it tho..

I had a ***** of a time getting to that pinch bolt on mine. Try getting to it with a trans blanket added to the mix!

I wound up using an offset open end wrench to get to it.

No wonder since you were using a 3/4 wrench for a 7/16 bolt. :D
