You might just be on to something. There is a hole in the top leg correct? If so the shorter snap screws might just miss the center leg.

OEM has a slot instead of round screw hole. The Ford part has a dimple that catches the opening in the lower yoke per their application. Their dimple is almost where we would need a screw hole.
