What I have done is removed the side cover to replace the fork seals and after removal I started looking at it wondering how I will get it back together. Does it take a special tool to hold the two fingers up to slide back on the forks. Any help would be GREAT Thanks

I don't know, never worked on that particular gearbox. My thought would be to consult the factory shop manual, which you can download, free, from MyMopar. Several of those, over there, came from the guys on here

I do not use a special tool, just dexterity and patience

X2. I can't remember "what all" I've been into. Saginaw, Munice, and of course A833 four speeds, the old Chev weak 3 speed as well as the newer full syncro 3 speed, and a Ford out of about a 65 ish Galaxie. I remember some "fiddlin around" but always worked them in. Sometimes, this took 3 or 4 "tries."

Thank you I will look at the manual I have. Still waiting for the seals to show up.

I kinda thought that but not there to get the seals to install them my sons picking them up for me still got 6 day of work to go before I can mess with it. Only been waiting 6 years to put this car together what is one more but hopefully the wife gives me the time for the running gear to get install this summer still waiting on the heads(302 casting for 318) to be completed Thanks for the input

I am getting kinda short on Patience. But will take my time the wife says I'm spending to much time on her(the car)then on her. We will get there just a matter of time and Patience. Thanks

Maybe this will help; reference is here. Google makes me look so smart LOL:

  1. If removed, place two interlock levers in pivot pin with spring hangers offset toward each other, so that spring installs in a straight line. Place E-clip on pivot pin.
  2. Grease and install new O-ring seals on both shift shafts. Grease housing bores and insert shafts.
  3. Install spring on interlock lever hangers.
  4. Rotate each shift shaft fork bore to straight up position. Install shift forks through bores and under both interlock levers.
  5. Position second/third synchronizer sleeve to rear, in second gear position. Position first/reverse synchronizer sleeve to middle of travel, in neutral position. Place shift forks in the same positions.
  6. Install gasket and gearshift mechanism. The bolt with the extra long shoulder must be installed at the center rear of the case. Torque bolts to 15 ft. lbs.
