floor pans

I am on 3 or so and feel that I need to turn it up a little bit more.

Retirement can be good provided you planned ahead. The reason I am working is a friend has opened a few retail mattress stores and ask me to work a couple of days a week. This week turned into 4 because someone is on vacation. Don't make a lot of cash, but all is good. My wife makes really good and that is what counts.
Lesson in life, marry a younger woman.
Just kidding, plan ahead for retirement and don't start planning when you're 50. Plan early and take advantage of any matching investment you can.

Yeah it is a trial and error deal but once you find a setting that works for you it's great. A little more wire may be the ticket and maybe move a little slower...

Thanks. Hoping to have some time tomorrow to practice some.
Thanks for the advice

How does the wire speed effect being able to get a good bead. I am on 3 1/2 and turned up to 4. Seems better in a few places, but not what I am after.
Any idea of where the wire speed should be set.
Lincoln flux core wire feed
I know I have been told I should have this type of welder or something else, but this is what I have to work with.
Any advice

wire feed speed is a definite determining factor.. I have found it best to experiment on some scrap metal - no two are the same

Thanks, I have a practice piece and can do okay, but when I attempted to do a lap joint in the car it's a different story.

Thanks. Yes, I found that plugging in to a different outlet can change things as well.

I am beginning to think I should have hired someone to have done this. But I don't think you are ever to old to learn.

It's not very pretty, but carpet will cover that anyway. But I did realize the floor is more solid, less spring thanks before
I did burn through one place which I can take care of.anxious to get this part complete so I can work on painting.

yea, I hear ya - but don't let your desire to be done with this and move on, allow you to short change it - if it's worth doing, it's worth doing well - be patient, it'll pay dividends in the long run

Thanks for your advice. Not impatient, just been on the floor for quite a while. Some because of family and some because of weather. I'm going to stop shortly. High around 95 feeling like 100 or better.

Wire speed has alot to do with it. If it is too fast it will feel like it is pushing the gun away from the metal as you weld. If it is too slow the wire will burn before it hits the metal and sometimes stick in the welding tip. Not sure on what number it should be on I never look at mine just turn till its right. Mine has 4 heat settings if I weld sheet metal with tacks it works on 2 or B I perfer 3 or C because it puddles better but if not fast in 1 spot too long it blows a hole in that setting.

If you are trying to lay a bead on sheetmetal that's not a good approach. Not going to read through this. Get similar metal gauge, clean it well and practice. You have to find the balance which can be difficult on a tap style voltage setting machine. Lap joint should not be nearly as hard as butt welding the panels.

Thanks for the info. I'm finished for the day. Extremely hot outside.
I have practiced on the same gauge material and did lay down a good bead.
But when I started inside the car I am not doing as well. It will be another week before I can start again

Much easier for the novice on thin metal is to clamp the panel in place and just do spot tacks every few inches and keep working around the panel until you have a continuous seam. Usually you can use a little more heat this way. Get a cheap pair or reading glasses to wear under your helmet will help and so will a drop light with a magnetic base that you can place right next to the weld sight. Too much backlighting inside the helmet seems to be my biggest enemy as far as seeing. Also, tons of info on millerwelding forums.

Good information. I appreciate it. I'm getting there. I hate I have to work next week. Normally I only work 2 days. I would love to get more complete
