I took the hood off my 64 Valiant to enlarge the hole under the scoop so I could fit a larger air cleaner. Never took the hood off an early A body before and was surprised by the tension in the torsion bars. (Especially when the hood hinge flew like a ninja star when I undid the bolt!).

So now I have to get the hood back on. Any hints or suggestions to make this any easier? I don't suppose I could bolt the hinges to the hood then thread them through the torsion bars?

Any help is welcome. Thank you.

Before I took it off it had a large gap seen in these pictures. How do I correct this?

Oh, man. That's gonna be a pain. When I did the hood on my 64, I did a full strip down, so I had the torsion bars out too and they were a nightmare to get back in. I ended up installing the hinges on the pivot first, then bolting the hood so it sat off the bars. I used that time to adjust the alignment, Then I had to use nylon rope on either side of the torsion bar mount to pull it back while someone held the hood up as high as they could. Good luck, man.

I took mine off and never put them back on 'cause I went with a fiberglass hood, but it seems to me it might be a little easier to wrangle those torsion bars into place with the fenders off the car. Of course in order to do that you have to drop the front valance, inner fenders, etc, etc....

Regarding that gap, you have some adjustablilty at the hinge bolts themselves where it secures to the hood, and as I recall there is another little adjuster in there somewhere. That gap doesn't look too bad. You should be able to work it out of there. Tape off all of the edges around the hood though so you don't scratch your fenders or cowl or elsewhere.

F**k!

Why do I do this to myself? :(

This is that other adjuster I was talking about. Part of the hood itself
